Question about propane tanks

Postby Toytaco2 » Sat Nov 21, 2015 2:49 pm

I have a low profile propane tank (10 or 11 lbs) with a manufactured date of 5/98. The tank has been stored inside a cabinet in the backyard and is still in pretty nice shape appearance wise with with no rust. It hasn't been refilled since about 2001. Its a perfect size to press into camping service for a portable propane fire pit and cook stove use. My question: Whats involved in getting the tank re-certified and is it worth the trouble compared to just buying a new tank. Can the propane filling station re-certify, or would you take it somewhere else?

Thanks,
Mike

A full service propane dealercan usually recertify a cylinder. But if it needs to have the valve assy replaced with an OPD type it may be costly.

I just had my second tank recertified. Not all of the propane dealers in my area do it. Only cost me $10 each with no valve replacements.

The original "out dates" is 12 years from the date stamp on the tank. The recertification is only good for 5 years.

My tank does have an OPD style valve. It was never filled more than 2 or 3 times, so it is very little used. I guess it makes sense to locate a "full service dealer" and see if it can be re-certified as those undersized tanks seem to be a little pricey. I'll take it in and see what happens. As usual, the help from this forum is much appreciated.

Thanks for asking the question. I also have a small(5#) tank that is outdated, but very little used.

I called around and finally found a friendly place that said they would take care of it for me. I'm taking it in tomorrow. The first place I called was a well known propane dealer who told me they only had one technician that could re-certify the tank and that he would be "tied up until the end of December". What a bunch of nonsense! Other places were more friendly, but made it clear they were not that interested in helping me. Its sure getting tough to find personal service from people who care in this world!
