Home away from home

Postby lrrowe » Tue Dec 29, 2015 7:44 am

When Lynn and I retired, we moved about two hours some of our old home to enjoy the lake life. But we frequently head back to the "old homestead" for doctor appointments, visit with friends and family and so,forth. We will make same day round day trips or stay as quests or rent a motel room. We would like to make more overnight trips but without overstaying our welcome or putting out so much money for motel rooms.

I could pull the CT for these trips, but that is a little too much for us to want to do for such close in overnighters so I am having thougts of either buying a low cost RV and leaving it in the lockup area of a campground (an idea I am not fond of right now) or making a simple TD just to haul for these trips. All the great ideas and TD projects on this site give me a lot of inspiration.

For sure, a TD project would be off in the future as I still have a lot to do on the CT. And I wrestling with my reluctance to hook up and head out with my CT for short travel distances and short duration trips. Heck I am retired, why do I need to worry about the added hookup/setup times and slower travel times? Why spend the extra initial and maintenace money on another trailer?

I am interested in hearing if others have come across this need/concept and how they approached it?
Bob

A teardrop is great for overnighting. I have used mine to go to weddings that are out of town(no driving after the dance) I can stay at the dance as long as I like without thinking of driving home. A teardrop can easily park in most parking lots or driveways.
Plus it does not cost much to tow.

Yes KennethW, these points are a few I considered as "pros" for having a simple TD. And going to a wedding is not that easy of a trip to make given the need to prep and dress for one. I trust that did not create that much of an issue.

We use ours as the portable hotel room with a kitchen

I've cooked lunch outside a museum before, and taken naps in rest stops on road trips. And we've only had it for less than a year :)

We nearly used it to haul christmas presents this year as space in the car was lacking
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.
