My guesstimate is 30-50% higher material costs and time-wise it depends if one gets a HF trailer and builds out over the wheels vs a 5x8 trailer from NT.
You need to clarify your post. Are you talking about comparing a 4 wide build versus a 5 wide build or two 5 wide builds with one of them on a 4 wide trailer and the other on a 5 wide trailer?
Good question... I had all three options in mind, 4-wide on a HF trailer, 5-wide on an HF trailer, and 5-wide on a NT trailer.
5-wide on a HF means more time and materials for the floor, but you trade cost and time there for cost on the NT trailer.
Some more background...
I prefer the look of a camper without fenders (meaning a 5-wide on 4x8trailer), and since my TV's will be a Dodge Grand Caravan and a Jeep XJ Cherokee I have some latitude with weight, width and frontal area.
Also with the Jeep, not having fenders could be a positive thing - if the Jeep fits, the trailer should fit too. Even better with a 4-wide. However this won't be an "off-road" trailer, but I do anticipate camping places that don't have roads.
But I'm having doubts with some of the recent posts regarding HF trailers.
I'm 6'3" tall, and on the wide side so I would like the camper to be 5' wide, but I don't know if I want to add another foot of width (counting the fenders) to go with a 5x8 trailer. But at the same time, I'm also worried about internal wheels wells in the sleeping area and the added build complexity of going out over the wheels (time - which I don't have a lot of) and money (of which I have none - five kids and one starting college in the fall).
I'm a 4-season tent camper (mainly with the scouts), so creature comfort is not the main goal - heck, half the time I just throw up a tarp shelter - but keeping all the camping gear together, hooking up and hitting the road is the main objective, and having a comfortable/warm place for my wife (she's fine in a sleeping bag on a twin air mattress, but she gets cold so last year I got her a -20 degree bag).
