Jerry can holder over fenders good or bad idea?

Postby sned » Mon Jun 27, 2016 12:34 pm

Posted this in Trailer and Chassis Secrets, I'm guessing I should have posted it here.

Has anyone mounted Jerry cans on fenders for water storage?

I have a Northen Tool 5x8 trailer and thinking about mounting Jerry can holders to right and left fenders and will also screw the holders to the side of the TD for strength and stability. The fenders should hold the weight with issues and screwing the holders to the TD will keep them stable.

Other then the containers being out in the sun what are you thoughts on mounting water containers over the fenders?

Good or bad? I don't know; but, I've seen others mount Jerry cans on the sides and it seemed to work okay.

IMO, and as a person who has had a utility trailer with the typical fender for over 4 decades, fenders can have enough trouble staying attached to the trailer without adding 8.33 lbs for every gallon of water, plus the weight of the can. Road impact shocks magnify the weight. It may take years for any problems to reveal themselves. I would mount a water can to the side structure if the body side was well engineered for the extra weight and vibrating mass. That's my concern and opinion. Exceptions would be if the fender was designed and constructed with carrying the additional weight from the git-go.

Do you have room behind the fender so you can moubt a bracket to the frame?

Do have room behind the fender probably better location to build a mount. Just trying not to use galley space for water storage.

so on the NT trailer frame the fenders are bolted directly to the frame with the same bolts that the frame is held together. If you mount it close to the frame I think it would hold up well. I've stood on the fenders (at 220lbs) without them movign significantly
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.

I wouldn't bolt to the fender. I have the NT 5x8 and while the fenders seem surprisingly strong for such a budget friendly trailer, I don't think they would hold up to the bouncing with the weight of the water cans on there.
