2 kids, 2 adults, A/C, heat, maybe bathroom. what model?

Postby zimm » Tue Aug 23, 2016 11:12 am

I'm new to RV's, but we've been looking a lot and going to dealers and a show. I just can't find what I need. I'm towing with a lifted 4 door Jeep wrangler (3500# max). A full size TT is out. We have two boys, almost 4 and 6. Camping mostly at parks, but the ability to stay at someone's house in the driveway would be nice as well as a roadtrip or two.

-We "think" we want a bathroom. I know showering the kids off after a day of playing the dirt would be really nice, and middle of the night pee without going outside would be nice. But we're sacrificing a LOT to have a bathroom
-Climate control- I want A/c and heat
-kitchen- don't care, I can cook outside. I also have an ARB fridge in the jeep so I don't even need a fridge
-beds- not sure if I want bunks, everyone in a king, or a small double and dinette for the kids
-Teardop? A-frame pop up? I don't know.

On my list so far:

R-pod 178. Queen in back, dinette up front for kids, bathroom, heat/AC. But it's pretty big for a jeep to tow around
Rockwood A122SXR- rigid pop-up. Queen bed, dinette to sleep on, heat/AC, outside shower, but no bathroom, just a portta potty on the floor. Very light and compact though- my favorite so far
T@B max teardrop- everyone sleeps in a king, the dinette is awkward for all 4 to slide in and eat, does have a tiny bathroom though
Little guy 6 wide teardrop- everyone in a king, no bath at all, minimal storage, do like the outside "kitchen", but no A/C or heat either

HELP!

Go with the R-Pod. I have a 179 and love it. We have towed it behind my sisters Honda Pilot with the V6 with no problems except gas mileage. If you have a V6 or a V8 you should have no problems towing it.

I agree, the R-pods seem to be pretty well put together, they have a good online presence (great forum community - http://www.rpod-owners.com/ ) and they have several models/floorplans to choose from. Cost is reasonable (especially if you can find a late 2016 or early 2017 right now - will be releasing the late 2017's next month (light blue in color now have power tongue jack and awning as options) so they are closing out the "older models" here in the KC area (and really Missouri in general) they are right around 13-14K.

You can also look into the Jayco Hummingbird - slightly higher price - almost an exact copy of the Pod, and for a bit more than the Jayco, there's also the Winnebago Minnie and Minnie Drop. (also nearly duplicates of the Pod)

Good luck and good roads!

In my area there is a place where you can rent an R-Pod. I rented one and what a total piece of junk. $17,000 piece of junk mind you. Not to say that it was any different from any other modern camper these days because I am jaded by only camping is campers that I have built or in vintage campers that while they have their flaws at least the walls didn't fall in if you happen to lean on them.

And when you are looking for a camper, speaking of a bathroom you need to pee or get off the pot if you'll pardon the pun because it dramatically changes everything. Speaking of new campers in general you are probably on the wrong forum in general. I would probably check out the forums at RV.net for new models. I hope that helps.
