Window Question

Postby TerryB89 » Sat Nov 23, 2019 4:27 pm

If I go to the junk yard and get a window out of a van, all it is, is a piece of glass in a rubber seal, how would you attach that to your tear build, and what if you mess up the rubber strip while removing it, how would you replace it?

Remember a van is just thin sheemetal. A teardrop is usually 1/2"to3/4" wood thick.
Probably wouldn't work.
Now if you find a trailer or camper getting parted out, those windows may work.

When you go there , look for Vans with “Interiors" , and windows that have a separate inner "trim ring" on the inside . For plywood trailers you can use most any window with a mounting flange.
There’s no place like Foam !

check w/ your insurance agent to see if he/she can help you locate an RV salvage/wrecking facility

w/ all the flooding and stormage across the Nation recently there should be one close enough to visit for scrounging

Remember most vehicle glass is not flat, most teardrop walls are. You might be making more work for yourself. To me a window that doesn’t open is useless in a teardrop. You need to be able to ventilate year round.

But like was said a RV salvage is a good place to look, we have a few around me and that all sell on eBay.

For various window weatherstrip go to perfect fit.com. They have it with different width grooves. There is a lock strip that goes in after the glass is in place and requires a special tool. The one I use is made by Lisle tools, I think it is part # 47000. But like others have said you would probably be better off with a standard camper window of the type that uses a clamp ring. Use butyl tape under the outside flange and draw up screws evenly and re-tighten them after several hours.
