Renogy 100ah Lithium Ion battery

Postby Vtec44 » Sun Dec 15, 2019 12:59 am

If you're looking to upgrade, Amazon is currently selling the Renogy 100ah Lithium Ion battery for $617. They're typically going for about $900. I went ahead and bought one.

Here's the link to the battery https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075R ... UTF8&psc=1

Looks like a good battery with high energy density, but lord that's a chunk of change for a 100 AH battery! Our Group 27 Trojan is still alive, but it won't last many more years (5 years old now). I was grumbling about spending over $200 for a battery when I got ours. It's been a good performer & we never run out of power.

I'll be interested to see how you like the battery & how many years it lasts. The life-cycle looks really good so it may go for many years. Please post about it when it's installed & running. Also, let us know in 5 or 10 years how it's working out!

I came across a comparison of all deep cycle battery types (6v, lead, gel, AGM, lithium) but can’t find the link. There were only two scenarios that beat out lithium. 1 was needing a battery for short term use, under 2-3 years with low power needs. 2. Having to charge the battery below freezing which lithium’s don’t like. Every other scenario lithium wins, when you combine scenarios it’s not even close.

On paper in my teardrop and our power needs that Renogy 100 AH battery would be the last battery I would need to buy. I shouldn’t need to replace my batteries for another 5 years I hope. :worship:

The lithium batteries are also about 1/3 the weight, can be discharged below 50%, and can be charged quicker. But yeah they are expensive. I have a 50ah version for slightly over a year now and so far so good. I run an Alpicool CF45 freezer, a water pump for my tankless water heater, six E26 base 5w LED bulbs, charge my laptop and cellphones with it. It's humming along just fine but I'm upgrading to 100ah for when it's cloudy and doesn't have enough light to recharge the battery fully. I want to be able to go a few days without having to recharge.

Parallel only, no series connection. Not many folks around here want to run 24V or higher so just an FYI...

Not sure if I understand you correctly but if you connect two 12v batteries together in parallel the voltage should remain the same at 12v but the amp/hr will increase. For example, two 12v 50ah batteries connected in parallel will give you 12v 100ah of battery power. I also connect my solar panels in parallel to give it a bit of redundancy.

Consider a 100AH Lithium battery to have the capacity of a 160-200AH lead-acid battery. Your 100AH lead acid should never be discharged beyond 50% (50AH), whereas the Lithium battery can be repeatedly discharged 80% or more. We had a Group 24 70AH in our T@B, and the Renogy fits in the same box. So we more than doubled the capacity with a drop-in battery which weighs half of the Group 24.

I was just pointing out that the Renogy battery can't be placed in series for higher voltages. Some of the big DIY solar installations I watch on Facebook are going to 24V to power large inverters. The Renogy isn't the right choice for that application. But it's a great for 12V systems, and can be paralleled for additional reserve capacity.
