Seeking shipper recommendation

Postby DoctahDeane » Tue Jan 28, 2020 7:55 am

Hi folks - need to ship my teardrop from North Central Florida to New England before March 1st. If anyone can recommend a shipping company that does a good job, I would be grateful. I know, why not go use it like it's intended to be used? I would 'cept my wife just had a hip replaced and needs me to put her socks on. At least I have job security.

Try Uship or Ready Logistics. A friend we camp with has used Ready Logistics a couple times to get vintage cars shipped to his location in Upstate NY and was happy with them. Can you tow the trailer yourself but stay in motels? Your probably looking at a two day ride, at least, depending where in New England is your destination.

After my previous post I looked up Ready Logistics. It appears that they are a broker that will set up shipping, rather than a shipper themselves. I believe Uship works on the same principle. I used a broker to set up shipping a pickup truck from Arizona to NY about 10 years ago, although I didn't realize just how it all worked at the time. I thought I was dealing directly with the trucking company. I found the broker/shipper in Hemmings Motor News. There are two fiberglass camper companies that sell factory direct only, Casita in Texas and Scamp in Minnesota. They will arrange delivery for buyers that don't want to go to the factory to pick up their new trailer. Maybe they could tell you who does their delivery and your trailer could be a sort of "backhaul" for them. Otherwise maybe a google search will turn up something. I almost think you could make two trips moving it yourself cheaper than shipping it. Or how about load the camper in a rental truck and your car on a car hauler trailer. Or find a "snowbird" from New England area that is returning home and has a trailer hitch.

Thanks so much for taking the time. Well, I did get a first quote - $2500!! Uh, no. I'm OK with doing the drive and have friends I can stay with on the way back. So definitely leaning in that direction. I think I'll be sure to stop at a trailer place in the pickup area and repack the bearings just to be safe. Thanks again!

Where you going in New England? Our weather usually isn't all that good in March. We have come home from the South in early March to have snow on the ground and continue on through the month. Are you hauling all your possessions when you move up north.

No, I live in Vermont (southern) and was building a Teardrop that was taking forever and then found this one, which is pretty much what I was after in my own build. So, if I drive, it'll be to go pick it up there and bring it back (empty). It's lightweight so no worries on that front.

Bring it to one of the vintage rallies at Brattleboro KOA, June and September. I think one of the participants also bought a teardrop in Florida, and drove down to get it.

You need to reserve a site as soon as possible because the campground books up for these rallies. If full they have a wait list as there are last minute cancellations. It's under new owners now, the old owners would also use the overflow area along the fence, I think the present owners do too. On Saturday afternoon they do an open house for the public to come in to tour the campers. They will probably continue with that. They discount the site a little if you are a participant in the rally.

Another idea; fly down to Florida, put the teardrop in a one way rental truck and bring it home. When we bought our teardrop it was in really bad shape so we brought it home in a 15 foot Ryder box truck. I had an advantage for that though because I worked for Ryder. It was only a couple hours from home.

All Set: Seeking shipper recommendation

Postby DoctahDeane » Tue Jan 28, 2020 6:19 pm

thanks everyone. Found a great ship[per through uShip - recommended by the seller. Good price, outstanding reviews. Will ship inside a struck, all strapped down like a race car. Wow, I feel like I just picked up an entire week!
