I should not have done that...totals $$$

Postby saltydawg » Mon Nov 23, 2020 7:26 pm

Well on the facebook group some asked about doing it cheap. Well I did some quick numbers.

steel for frame 450
axles 650
fiberglass skins 1100
epoxy 600
foam 250. Batteries 660
door 350
windows and hatches 350
electrical ( chargers, fuse block, cable to truck, em brake box, etc ) 350
wheel with tires 50 ( craigslist )
I am going to stop there, esp sense I just put in a 600 buck order today for water tank, water heater, diesel heater, sink, faucet etc.

probably missing another grand, probably have another grand to go.

Well that is the last time I think about dollars with this thing.

First order was 7.5 gallons iirc $320 bucks

second was 3.5 iirc but 1.5 gallons of that was thin resin for doing the seams and it was 75 for the 1.5 gallons

I used 2 on the floor, it was my first panel and I used too much. wall panels where closer to 1.5 gallons each. bed platform was a gallon, front and rear walls totaled about 2. roof was a gallon.

I do have some left, about a 1/2 gallon of the thin and 3/4 gallon of the thick. Remember the panels are thick epoxy it goes on thick.

It might be closer to 500, but I dont remember exactly. I think sawtooth ultimate his first order was 10 gallons, but he used a thin resin and had to coat both the skin and the glass, I only had to do one surface as it was thick.

Holy Crap Salty...
My Overlander Camper is all in so far at about $2200K. That includes my appliances and LiFePo4.

With what I've learned from my past builds, the next should be about $500-600 more due to gel-coating.

Before you claim it cheaper to build off the truck vs. from a trailer frame... Only difference is you have to buy an axle and mine the roof lifts for a standie.

5x8 trailer from northern tool $500
doors $600
mattress fan battery and hinge $400
epoxy and glass $200
lumber $600
incidentals the rest
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.

Oh I know what the driving costs where. doing the body like I did was over 2k alone, then 660 bucks in batteries, an inverter along with the rest of the over built and engineered electrical system.

Could I have done it cheaper, absolutely. Would I have a trailer with exactly what I wanted, no.

I figured it would be about 5k, but I blew that out by simple things, like the heaters for the batteries. Sure they where only 12 bucks each, but I also decided to put them on a thermostat that was another 10 bucks, plus wiring. those 40 buck small items add up.

But in the end I have what would probably cost 15k or more to buy. Heck a smaller hiker trailer with just a few options is about 7k and they are one of the cheap ones.

I am hoping the drawer slides are covered in the extra grand of things I forgot, they where only 220 bucks. Then all the birch ply for the kitchen slide out, bed supports and power wall/pantry is just another 200 no big deal.

Oh I canceled the order for the diesel park heater, turns out the 5k is way more than I need. plus the issues they have, instead I ordered a 20 buck electric heater. Opps almost forgot the 350 buck inverter generator to run the heater. Yes I bought that today.

Like I said I need to stop thinking about this.......

LEAVE ME ALONE

Good thing I am basically building this trailer out of my disposable income after selling a spare night vision goggle that I made a huge profit on.

Glad I did a cargo conversion. Selling the teardrop basically paid for the trailer.
The conversion was just under $1,000.
Didn't do any electrical yet. I've gone so long without 12volt , kinda don't need it.
No pump yet for the sink either. One day.

This was the only build that I actually saved all the receipts and added it up. It was more than I thought.

Come on do some 12 volt power, its only 10 per usb, 30 per light, 10 per switch, fuse block is only 30, dont forget the charger, its only a 120 bucks for your 330 buck battery. While your at it, might as well have an inverter for 100.

then we add wire, and a few crimp connectors, whats another 100.

Now you have power might as well put in the water pump its only 40 bucks with a switch, but dont forget you need the 75 buck water tank, and the 15 dollar fill connection.

Well after seeing what trailers like the uev 440 cost, and tear drops like the high country or what ever I just looked at for 17k.

I think I got a steal on my camper. COST be damned. Well not really, but I truely think to buy what I built would be north of 20k. It may not be as fit and finished as the 50k uev 490, but its less than 20% of the price.

Just looked to confirm the hiker extreme tear drop is 10k. for a tear drop. I am sure it goes up from there.

For what you are building an how .Seem not to far out of line .When we where looking for real fiberglass skins could not find any skins not made just of chopper gun crap want to have woven glass . So when we did our skins g/f 1''/g where about $3.00 a sq.foot with out any labor .So buying yours think you did good from your price sheet seams the extras kick up the price. I think the cost of battery is not the best way to go. generator and a small battery is the best . And you can use the generator for other things but I am a cheap .......Epoxy 600 this is why i like poly 10 gal. cost me about $150 but I am cheap
