Hurrican Hinge question

Postby waterguy1111 » Fri May 14, 2021 6:03 am

Hey there. I have pretty much finished my teardrop build. I have installed my galley door and all and just have a question. Do I need to worry about any slack, side-to-side of my galley door in the hinge? There is only about 1/8 to 3/16th of an inch between my door and sides? Will it shift or should I not worry about it? It's not a really big deal but I wasnt sure if I should somehow put some kind of stops on the ends of the hinge somehow??

Thank You!

Mine does move from side to side a little. I sometimes find myself giving it a thump with the heel of my hand to move it across a couple of millimetres before I snug down the latches.
Some people add a stopper at each end to prevent this. Maybe I will one day.

I check mine all the time because it does slide. There's about 1/4" of play in it.

I’m in a similar place with my build and just had this discussion with Tony in an offline message. Although Tony mentioned that shifting is not always a problem, especially with a bigger and heavier hatch (mine weighs 41 pounds) I only have a 3/16” space between hatch and galley wall trim and would not be thrilled with the resulting crunching sound should the hatch shift unknowingly. I found that cutting the inner part of the two part hurricane hinge back by 1/2” and placing a 5/16” diameter plug in that space (I’m using Delrin) works both as a stop and a rub bushing. That 5/16” plug is a snug fit in the outer barrel of the hinge but I might add a retaining screw to it at a later date if it wanders out of position.

I learned years ago on this forum to place a small washer at the ends of the hurricane hinge with a stainless steel screw.
The screw goes into the hinge where the 2 parts meet.
Works great.
It's best to have the hinge overhang the walls about a 1/2" or more, for run off while camping in the rain.
