Built in the early seventies. Bit like a sheep wagon.

Never too sure about links. Here's screenshots of the pictures of this artifact that is going on display at the Australian National Museum in Canberra in 2022.

The museum's words:

" Following retirement from the University of Sydney’s Department of Geology in 1973, leading Australian research geologist, Dr John Dulhunty, with his wife Roma, embarked on several pioneering fieldwork expeditions to Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre.

Their research, along with that of others, helped to unravel the hydro-geology of Lake Eyre and the climatic history of Australia over the past 250,000 years and which yielded many important research papers on the sedimentological and geomorphological changes of the lake.

Affectionately referred to as the “hollow log”, John and Roma lived in this cabin on their expeditions. It could be loaded on a four-wheel drive and was dust-proof and sand-proof, providing shelter from high winds, dust storms and drifting sand. It served John and Roma for seven years, before retiring with them to Sydney.

The hollow log has been installed in our Great Southern Land gallery, set to open in 2022."

No FB account?!

How on earth do you get through life without reading hours and hours of meaningless twaddle?

Disclosure: I don't have an account either. I just occasionally borrow the wife's. I use FB marketplace as a substitute for Craigslist.

Iv'e given some thought to getting one of these;
https://www.equipmentfacts.com/listings ... 00?gtmlt=1
and remodeling the interior. A 1500 gallon or larger is about 60" diameter. Put a door in one end, and utilize the top fill hatch for a fan.
Weather proof as all get out.
Too bad they're so doggone expensive, even at auctions.

I have been inside these containers to put bulk head fittings in them, around 1/2” thick,
The feet ? Take a lot of room inside, it's truly a confined space that’s warm very warm :frightened:

Wonder if the windows open on this water tank camper? Pretty good cross ventilation if so.

The curly chimney pipe is interesting. Must have had some cold nights?

They used it at Lake Eyre, which is usually dry.
It can get 1.5 meters of water as often as every three years, but a fill up only happens a few times per century.
So they were way out in the desert (actually it isn't that far from my house) with no actual body of water to moderate temperature swings. I'd imagine she was freezing cold some nights, and savagely hot during the day.

BTW, Donald Campbell set a world land speed record on the lake in 1964. 403.1 mph.
