Fire Extinguisher Recommendations

I just went through an interesting thread regarding "where" to place a fire extinguisher. I'm asking if anyone can recommend
any particular brand and any other "important" features I should be on the look out for prior to purchasing one.

my 5lb fire extinguisher along with a fire blanket is in my tongue box. I see others mounting them inside the bed area of the trailer or galley - my logic for the tounge box = it's located at a halfway point 'if/when' needed between the tow vehicle and trailer, along with if I was to have a fire = the plan is to "get away" from the fire - thus having the fire extinguisher in a 'neutral' 1/2way middle point for easy access 'if and when needed'. (also carry a 2.5lb between just inside the driver's door/seat).

I have never liked the thought of having to 're-enter' a burning 'bed/galley area' trying to retrieve a pre-mounted fire extinguisher if that area is on fire - would rather be able to get out & away first - then return to fight the fire if able too so...... (when during our group trailer outings/crawls - I would normally pull the 5lb 'out of' the tongue box when camped, hooking it to it's outside hook mount on the box, then informing others in our group of it's location for it's use if need be..........) the 'fire extinguisher' decal showing it's location and red mounting hook can be seen here on the side of my tongue box.....

John, we keep our fire extinguisher in the tongue box.
It's a Kidde 5-B:C Automotive Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher.
What I highly recommend is the First Alert Smoke Alarm: 3V Lithium, Photoelectric, 85 dB @ 10 ft, LED Visual Alert, Hush Button.


It’s very small and has a piercing sound that can’t be ignored.
It chirps occasionally to verify battery health.

A maintenance note on dry powder type extinguishers; make it a routine to not only check the charge on it, but to also invert it (turn it upside down) momentarily before putting it back on its holder. The powders can settle and clump over time, making them less effective. By flipping them over occasionally the powders should stay loose.

Danny just brought up the "chirping" low battery alarm sound, about a year or two ago when my trailer was stored during the winter, when I was outside walking by it - I would hear a distance 'chirping' sound every so often, I would stop looking around the yard thinking, 'that is a different sounding bird I have never heard before', wonder where is it hiding at? After a month or so later, I had the door to the trailer open one day and heard it again, but louder = which is when I realized what it was.

I do that when I remember. Sometimes you can actually feel a "thud" as the clumped up powder lets go.

What's the reason for that? I've not heard bad reviews before and most places around here, that is the only brand available.

Is there a way to rig up a tube to the FE nozzle to direct it at a certain area ... Say one is mounted outside with a tube directed inside ...

I suggest a Fire Blanket, it never goes bad. Better yet both blanket and extinguisher.
Got mine off a Facebook ad but there are plenty on Amazon.

I got mine at Home Depot, it's DOT rated and has a bracket to strap it down.

There was a recall a few years ago and most places are just selling what's in stock.
