Bingo!
I saw one of these when I was a kid visiting a lookout station, it wasn't till many years later that I understood why it wouldn't work. Air is a very good insulator and the lighting has already traveled miles through air to get to you; the glass insulators don't do a thing. The idea behind lighting protection is to have everything inside of the building rise and fall at the same potential as the lighting is conducted to ground around you.

I’m sure those old stools are a holdover from the early lookout
days.

The lookout we help staff was first staffed from a wall tent in 1920. They built a cabin on the mountain in 1922. In 1947 they built the L4 that is still used today.

Today I backed up the micro SD cards from my trailer's Raspberry Pi microcomputers that manage the LiFePO4 battery and solar charging. I have been meaning to do this for a while, as the system is about 8 months old now. SD cards have a habit of crapping out at the worst times (ask anyone with a flash drive or a digital camera), and now that I have them custom programmed the way I want them, they needed backups. I physically had to remove the SD cards & use them to make a disk images on my desktop computer. Now I can re-image new ones if needed.

Just a reminder for anyone else running a Victron VRM on a Raspberry Pi with Venus OS...

Everyone else go back up your laptops. You're welcome.
Cheers,
Lauren

I had an interesting day today. My wife had a coworker ask us to go through her father’s estate to see if we would be interested in any of his tools. He was a machinist for International Harvester. We ended up bringing home a 1969 Cub Cadet lawn tractor with a wagon and snow blade. He was the original owner in 1969. He clearly took exceptional care of the tractor and it was too cool of a story for us to pass up. In addition to the tractor we brought home a 1944 Delta Bandsaw, a 1955 Delta drill press, a 70’s era Atlas metal lathe, a bench grinder and cheap router table.

Great score on the tools, Cody.... especially the drill press and lathe.

Thanks guys. I think his widow was just happy they were going to someone who will use them. I actually ended up paying her more than her asking price because I don't think she really knew exactly what she had. She initially told me $200-300 for everything  I would have felt horrible not offering at least a "fair" price for everything.

I'm planning to do a cleanup/restore on the tractor and implements and the band saw. I haven't decided if I'll keep the lathe yet. My garage is small and it takes up a good amount of room. Not sure I'd get enough use out of it to justify it sitting around.

If you don't have a good friend that has one, think twice ;) If it's in good shape it may surprise you.
Build a bigger garage or sell it to a good friend!

My VRM is back up and running.

If you need to clone a disk image from a micro sd, here are some good instructions for Mac, PC, and Linux.

Finished refurbishing my old 5x10 open trailer getting it up to par for my next adventure (on the slab this time with the Kingpin).

20yr old trailer was stripped down to metal, treated with Ospho, primed and painted, then re-decked and rewired. Also put in new bearings and races, along with new Load Range D radials. It was rotting away out back. Always more work than I planned!
