What kind of seal does this trailer use for the doors?

Postby *Inside » Mon May 29, 2023 2:18 am

I recently came across the Kuckoo Camper from a german manufacturer. It seems to be extremely well designed and assembly comes together in just a day at their assembly line. Here's a video (in German) of their assembly process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0RyxjlwU-E

The door construction is extremely interesting
* The exterior of the camper (including the door) is fiber-glassed
* The door has stiffeners
* The door jamb is double thickness plywood (15mm x 2)
* The inner door ring appears to be painted aluminum
* There's some sort of seal mounted to the aluminum door ring (<- this is what I'm trying to figure out)
* There's also some sort of a thin D-seal on the door itself.

Any idea what these might be?

Go to the Trimlok website and you'll find the seal you're interested in. It's got a EPDM bulb that's attached to a "U" shaped clip. The clip portion snaps over a lip you'll create from plywood that is part of the trailer's framework.

It looks like the same Trim-Lok seal I discuss in my book.

Trim-Lok suggests a bulb compression of 30-50% and says that a fully compressed bulb will take a set and not rebound. Dunno about the seal on the door. Must be an inset D-shaped seal.

Ah it is just Trimlok - I don't know what I was thinking as I was staring at it last night. I got a sample piece and it does kinda look like that after it's been squished into shape a lot.

How thick/tall is your inner door lip? Do you know what p/n you used for the trimlok/where you bought it? I'm kicking myself for not buying the standard 26x36 doors back when they were cheap - almost $500/ea now - it seems like it'll be much much cheaper (in money, not time) to build my own :(

Also, looks like the inner lip isn't 1/4" aluminum, but probably 1/4" aluminum composite board (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0RyxjlwU-E&t=1013s)

I'm thinking if I add aluminum L trim to the inside of the door (over the fiberglass) it'll be a nice and flat mating surface to the bulb seal:

Maybe I'm over thinking about the aluminum - you didn't use any, right Tony? Haven't had any leaks?
