Trailer suggestions

Postby McFish1951 » Tue Nov 19, 2024 6:27 pm

I want to do a 6 x 8 foamie; I have a utility trailer with a ramp and side rails already. But it weighs about 750 lb bare. Does anyone have a recommendation for a lighter frame? It must be 6 x 8 or longer.

Not wanting to build your own? 750 sounds very heavy. Does that include rails, ramp, and deck?

I found that you are better off building your own frame. Axle location is very important. Look at my frame in the Build Forum: Monte's Ramblin' Rose. The weight and costs are detailed, including the axle.

A foam cabin for a trailer that size would only add about 100 pounds.

There is a gate, as well as 2x8 floor boards. Based on someone else's post, the gate is about 100 lb; and .75 in plywood in lieu of 2x8's would save about 75 lb. Ideally I could bolt the floor of the cabin directly to the frame, thereby skipping the trailer floor. If I do that, I would have to add a skirt piece of foam and PMF, sort of like what the "road foamie" build has, for a drip strip.

Do you have any pics of it. If it were me, I'd keep it and start shedding pounds. Better to have a stronger frame.
If it has thick wood slats. Replace it with plywood. Could also remove the sides and the ramp unless you want those.
I have a friend that cut down the ramp and used it to haul stuff on like coolers, firewood, ect. It folds up when not in use.

The rails are integral to the strength of the frame. I plan on removing the drop down rear gate/ramp. If I lose 75 lb by replacing the 2x8's and 100 lb from the ramp, I'm at 575 lb for the frame. I am mobility challenged; ie can't crawl around and get dressed without more than 45 inch headroom. So I plan to have a rear door into a 72 inch high cabin. the rear 3 feet is 72" high, then it slopes to the front where it is 48 inch or maybe less. This helps aerodynamics.

So, you might want to build something like this only maybe a little taller? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SACbs2ihxRc The trailer with the fold down ramp might be handy for you.
