Camping Season AHOY!!

Postby BrianStaceyErnst » Mon Jun 14, 2004 7:35 am

Well Stacey and I have been very busy with end of the year soccer games and such. I've checked in on this board a bit but haven't said much lately. Mostly we have been gung-ho on our trailer. We had most of the exterior done for our first jaunt down to Cape Cod back in April. Next weekend will be the first of three continuous weekends camping. She wanted her decor done and I wanted a spare tire mounted. The pictures are below in our regular site. Feel free to comment back!

Enjoy,

Brian and Stacey Ernst

Thanks for the comments. I assume next year refers to the national meet in Kansas. We are definitely going. Hope to see your excellent rig and tow vehicle as well.

Its been a long road to get where we are with the trailer for sure. (notice there are no pictures of our *AHEM* galley). A bit more time and a bit more money will have that wrapped up. We will have natural maple cabinets in the galley and continue the maple theme inside with matching paneling and woodwork.

I figure by next year I will have nothing to do on it except polish it on a bi-monthly basis! LOL!

I am off to install the 6 pin wiring harness, allowing the new vehicle's charging circuit to give the trailer's battery a boost while driving.

Best regards!

Nice Brian! Did you paint or going to paint the original curved pattern on the finished cub?

Brian,

Do you know what the differences are between the Cub, Modernistic and Modernaire teardrops? Or are they all the same trailer but just called different things? Was the Cub only available in kit form?

I've also seen one called the Marvel Dwyer which is definitely the same trailer family.

Here are a couple pictures I took last weekend of one. Click on them for larger views.

NO PAINTING!.. I had considered painting the swipe red but the all aluminum look seems so much classier than the old BATMAN look it had before.

Nick,

LOVE the Kenskill trailer.. and I love the Ford wires idea!

As far as the history of the Cub-Modernistic-Modernaire shape, very little can be documented. The Cub appears to be the one that was available in the kit form for sure. However, the original designers ( Dwyer perhaps? ) had their own Manufacturing companies since they created the shape. Most, if not all were built in California and the National Trailer Sales outfit gave them national marketing.

All of the Marvel-Dwyers I have seen have the rounded windows, but the framework is all the same as all the others. Additionally many of the NTS ads show the same flared fenders that were on the KENSKILS. It is entirely possible that the fenders and windows may have been a way to identify what were kit trailers versus the ones that were built and sold complete. These are only educated guesses to be sure but, it seems that most people say they have a 1947 MODERNISTIC, and we all know they made them for many years.. not all in 1947. I know mine is a 1948 because of the year it was ordered, shipped and assembled. Evidenced by the original brochure.

I also know that Modernistics had a distinct decal or emblem that identified them. As Marvel-Dwyers had their plaque.

Surely there must be someone out there who knows but hasn't given out the details, or they have allready passed away.

One thing that is certain: They are the most popular design after the Kit and are unique in their construction.

Best regards,

Brian

Brian,

Thanks for the insight. I really like the Cub design and the fact that they were built from a kit. I can imagine the excitement of the crates arriving. Like a big kid's erector set.

I'll have to go back and take a closer look at that trailer in my pictures and see if I can find a label. It's at a small museum here along with a few other trailers and old cars. It's really a family nursery with the added bonus of a museum.

Click here to see more pictures from there.

I'm still going to try and use the wire wheels on my Ken-Skill. I have to get new hubs or wheel adapters to mount them. The wheels look great on yours and I like how your spare came out.
