New Teardrop Design Input

Postby Shadow Catcher » Sun Feb 27, 2011 8:00 pm

I may be in a position to give input into the design of a new comercialy produced teardrop. This will be a high quality trailer.
The owner and I have already had a long conversation and he did follow my advice and is building a 5X10 and has a number of orders.
So you now have an opportunity to give input, what features would you like to see?

A tool box!
I didn't realize it until after I built mine, but it would be nice to have a compartment in the quarter panel that would hold a jack, fourway, and a few hand tools.

Whatever happened to your Mega Mini?

1. A profile the covers the frame on the side.

2. Something with at least 14" automotive style wheels.

Good luck!

No this is not Eye4Design and no we still do not have our MM but suposedly it is being worked on. I will give them till next month to finish or I contact the law firm in Elkhart.
Miriam they have a 12V outlet, as well as 110AC.
eatatjoz I would think an available tongue box would fill the need for tools.
2bits They do have 14" wheels and I am going to suggest a model that can have bolt patern compatable with the TV i.e. Jeep, Land Cruser... and a more rugged suspension for serious off road boondocking.

How about something more modern than birch everywhere on the cabin and galley. Nix the brass. On-board fresh water and grey water (10G max each) tanks - with a manual pump, not an electric pump. A battery on the tongue, not in the galley (like the LG 5x10 SS). An on-board charger - just plug in an extension cord at home and it keeps your battery "tended".

And here's one that has been kind of a problem for me with TxDOT - a VIN stamped into the frame, not a sticker.

As to the comment about Automotive-type tires. I would never want to tow a trailer on radial tires. I think the wheels should be a size that accommodates the use of readily-available bias-ply trailer tires.

Just got back from talking with Ryan at Lefty Origionals. I had suggested to him that that he go with a 5X10, I have pictures of the first rolling chassis.
The frame is powder coated steel with Dexter axles and the 5 x 10 will come standard with breaks. The floor and sides are three-quarter inch marine grade plywood triple polyurethane coated all CNC router shaped including screw holes. What this means is that in the future if you have a problem a release agent can be used on the glue and a side replaced easily. The plywood has an oak inner ply, so it isn't Birch. Also hickory and a couple of other types of wood are available. The bottom is under coated with a rubberized undercoating and the sides extend down over the frame. Available will be a sink with water pump, gas cook top, available water heater, available external shower. Hubs are available to handle off-road tires. LED lights are available, he is using a Progressive Dynamics power center. Radio inside and/or out are available as is a TV. Fantastic fan is standard. Battery is up front.
Colors and how you want the cabinetry set up, pretty much whatever you can come up with.

What profile are you looking to use? I've always thought something along the cub modernest style would be interesting.
