Body Filler?

Postby fbaly » Thu Mar 03, 2011 9:30 pm

Alright crew Ive been deep into the build for a couple months and I need to finish it within the next four weekends.

I put CPES on the walls and now I am trying to get the imperfections out of the walls.

Would anyone give advice on this?

I tried an epoxy but there are too many imperfections.
How about using body filler on the whole wall and sanding it down to perfection?

Thoughts?

thanks

You might run into problems with adhesion of the body filler to any epoxy. While not cheap, There is a product called quick fair that may be a better choice. http://boatbuildercentral.com/proddetai ... S3_QFa_3qt

Did you use the fairing compound in the epoxy? There are a number of additives to build a coat that can be easily sanded. That's what I use.

As long as you have a decent base to attach to, covered in epoxy,
I'd imagine that the bondo would work as a skim coat. Don't put it on thick or over a seam that's not sealed with epoxy. It'll want to pop. How smooth your sides turn out, kinda depends on how much time you want to put into them and what your tools are. I wouldn't do bondo directly on wood though. Others opinions may vary. Doug

I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination but I have had success with the Rot Doctors epoxy filler and Bondo Light. Both products were put over CPES and have not had any problems with cracks or adhesion. The epoxy was used to fill larger voids while the bondo was used more extensively with skimming the surface, sanding then skimming again until satisfied.
