Paint - Epoxy question

Postby terryjones1 » Mon Mar 21, 2011 9:07 am

I am building a TTT using 3/4" x 1" framing and 1/4" plywood inside and out. I have used epoxy as the glue.

My question is with covering the outside plywood walls.

I used 1-1/2" fiberglass tape and epoxy on the seams. I am now going to cover the outside wall with epoxy, while the wall is laying down flat.

See below:

After applying the epoxy on the outside wall, I can either sand and paint the outside wall, while it is laying down, or wait until the walls are installed on the trailer.

If I paint now, I am concerned with epoxy "running" down the side walls when I apply 3" fiberglass tape & epoxy to the edge of roof and top of side wall.

If I paint after installing the 3" fiberglass tape, I am concerned with paint "running" while wall is in verticle position. I will be using Pettit Easy Poxy Paint, applying it with a "roller".

I want take the approach that is the easiest of the two. I am leaning towards painting when walls are installed!

Anyone have experience applying Pettit Easy Poxy Paint, while wall is verticle?

I painted mine while it was "up" and now wished i had done some prepainting while the walls were laying flat - Thin paints tend to run a bit and I ended up having to sand a few of them out on the first coat. You can probably get away with a first "color" coat while it is flat - however please note that if you plan on sealing the edges where the walls meet - you'll have leave an area unpainted so the epoxy can stick to epoxy - not just a layer of paint

Thanks for your input!

I have planned on "masking" the edges.

Would "running" paint be better or worse than "running" epoxy?

I painted mine while it was flat. It was MUCH easier this way and there were no runs to worry about.

TJ, flat is nice and everything will "settle" ... Runs are just something that needs to be sanded out, paint or epoxy ! More work !!!! :o
There’s no place like Foam !
