Anyone built a boat?

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

go for light weight stitch and glue, easy to build and easy to cartop, a heavy boat is not as easy to make it go and a chore to load. after building a few stitch and glue boats I used the same idea to build my boat, there are no fasteners in the box of my TD, only ply and glue. fasteners loosen and invite rot. poly and epoxy glues are stronger than the wood...

I get a kick out of boat building too.. 8)
Built a 17' Folbot from a kit in 1977 (vinyl over wood frame)...still works great today:

And did a small sailboat (stitch and glue) from Bateau.com in 2005 which was also fun:

And, recently we got to attend a Jefferson State Tearjerker gathering at Applegate Lake in Southern Oregon, and I got to see one of Doug Hodder's boat builds. Image
I believe this is a Glen-L design called the 'Zip'. Since he mentioned building it in this thread which was started in '05, it's at least 6 years old and it is still in phenomenol condition, and like all other Doug Hodder creations, it is gorgeous and the level of attention to detail is superb

The only problem now, is how to go camping with the sailboat and the trailer at the same time

That's my first boat, built it in 2001...good to see it out and about Grant. It has a Mercury 1959 Mark 58A 40 hp outboard on it. If you sat in it...you found that there wasn't a lot of leg room in it. In my 2nd build, the Malahini plans, I opted for a deeper draft boat, stuck a 4 stroke 60hp Merc on it. #2 is for sale if anyone is interested in it. It's a real looker! The top deck on this one is bookmatched Honduran mahogany planking...not faked. Also has Classic Instruments and a wooden wheel in it. Doug
