tire pressure

Postby Home Away... » Tue Aug 02, 2011 4:10 pm

Today I bought a spare tire with rim at Walmart for my teardrop built on a Northern Tool 5'X8" trailer. The tire is a 530-12, like the ones that came with the trailer. Except, it is a 2 ply and the original tires are 4 ply. I was looking at the new tire & noticed that it has a psi rating of 55, while the original tires have a psi of 80. That surprised me. Would the different psi's be due to the 2 ply vs 4 ply? Thanks.

I would also check the load rating on the tires. If it is lower than the originals I would still use it. but drive much slower when it is being used. That 2 ply on it worries me. What will Wallmart do next to cheapen up its products. Getting bad when Harbor Freight has better stuff.

According to the Carlisle tire website, the 55 psi tire will be a Load Range B and can carry 855 pounds each, while your original 80 psi tires will be Load Range C which can carry 1050 pounds each.

So unless your trailer is over 1710 pounds (2 x 855), you don't have a problem.

Harbor Freight has the tire & wheel like the one on your trailer, 80 psi,
1050 # capacity, I purchased one last week for a spare to match my tires. I don't remember for sure but think it was about $60.00. Of course you can pick up one of the 20% discount coupons from nearly any magazine.
