That little "toolbox" ( self leveling shelf ) fully loaded weighs about 7 pounds. What you didn't take into concideration is that it hangs within inches of the lid hinge so the bulk of the weight will be at the hinge point and only a small portion of it is transfered to the hatch bottom. So there is a simple mechanical advantage at work here.

Also, be careful not to hang objects that could catch fire above the stove area. The rule of thumb is to keep a space, 19" high, free and open above the burners.
