Battery powered portable radio...

The wife asked me to find a really Good battery powered portable radio... AM/FM ... I figured I’d just ask youze’ guys who have vast experience with this type of thing ... any preferences ??? ... Money is no object , cause’ she’s paying for it ...

I have a $5 one from sears outlet about 10 years ago it uses batteries, hand crank or solar.
But that's not what you ask is it?
I don't have a clue as to a good battery powered radio although there is one in my car
maybe that's what she is hinting she wants a new radio in a new car. clever woman

The first question should be what do you want it for i.e. great sound, emergency/weather warn, Sirius satellite, short wave (fun to DX in remote locations). Portable as in hand held or the stereo in the teardrop.
The Stereo in Compass Rose has a Sirius receiver and I take along a NOAA weather warn radio and I could run outside speakers but dont believe in sharing my taste in music.

I bought this same one and it burnt up whan I had it outside in the summer here in Phoenix. I guess the sun is too harsh here for that.

I really like the CCRadio for talk radio and late night DXing. It is a pretty substancial unit so I carry a Sangean DT400W pocket radio in my tear, or suitcase or pocket when I am out and about. Geuss it depends on what you want to do.

Since weather/alert radio's got into this "I just want an old transistor radio" conversation I'll throw in my two cents worth. When looking for a weather radio I had the opportunity to try the Eton Solarlink and the RadioShack® 7-Channel Handheld Weather Radio with SAME side by side. Although the Solarlink had some nice bells and whistles it did not have as good of reception as the Radio Shack model. The Radio Shack model is basic, weather only with alerts, no am/fm or anything else, but it pulled in the signal far better than the Solarlink. Only problem is it eats batteries like they were free, so would suggest the rechargeable ones for this unit. Just my two cents worth

Since this seems to have morphed into a discussion on weather radios, I did my homework in comparing the ones that are were available and chose a Reecom with SAME technology. the one thing that sets it apart from the Midland radios is that after an alert it shuts itself off (still monitoring). It can be powered either from 120 AC, internal batteries, or 12 V.

Like the idea of auto shutdown, wish I had that. Midlands from what reviews I've seen don't get very high marks. I would expect better considering they are maybe the largest producer of weather radios, CB's and the like. I remember years ago Midland being the best.

Ours goes off with great regularity during the summer as it is set to catch everything, and you get tornado and severe storm warnings for not only Fulton County but the surrounding counties as well. This is annoying but if we are taking it camping we don't want it to exclude other areas. Atonement is given at the end of SAME messages which trigger it to shut down.
At Boogie in the Hills it went off five times and we certainly got the weather that went along with those warnings. Fortunately none of them were tornado warnings in the area where we were.
From what I understand the Midlands you have to set which warnings you want to pick up and from where, with the Reecom it is by default set to receive everything, including tsunamis which we are not likely to get in Ohio.

I bought a Grundig many years ago and am very happy with it. It looks similar to the CCRadio and pulls stations in very well. I have a CD player built in and an MP3 player but we like to listen to NPR radio for the news and for this, the Grundig pulls in stations better than the radio in the CD player. Out in the sticks, a good radio is nice.

I bought a cheap Coby cd, am, fm, player. Works well in the boonies. Most of the time I just pick my guitar/mandolin for music.
