Spare tire location question

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

I carry an 8" 4 on 4 spare in the truck bed. It fits the chuckwagon, the 4x7 and will work in a pinch on Chubby even though he has 12" tires. It looks kinda funny with and 8" and a 12" going down the road ( Yes it has happened) but it got me where I was going. I lovingly refer to it as my "space saver spare"

My trailer takes five stud Ford wheels and so I found a space saver spare from a Mondeo. The only problem is that the offset is different so I have to carry five extra whel nuts to space out the space saver wheel.

To ask a question though how many times in your driving career have you had to use a spare? I've been driving now for 24 years and I've never had a puncture?

I have a 5-on-4-1/2" Mopar space-saver spare that is going to go under the trailer, behind the axle and under the galley. I plan to build a cradle that the tire will simply slide into, with a locking bar at the back that will retain the tire in place. It will be big enough to them store the regular-sized wheel and tire. My Cherokee and my Hudson both have the same bolt pattern, so if I had the misfortune to have two flats on the same trip, I have the spare from them to use, as well.

On our trailer we purchased one of the temporary spare tires and mounted it under the galley area. The spare for my parents trailer we put under his spare tire for his Nissan pickup. We just lowered the original spare down and put the spare for the trailer under it. There is still plenty of ground clearance.

I carry the spare in the TV. Bought it a W-Mart. White spoked wheel, 5 on 4 1/2, tire good enough to get me to the next place to get the flat fixed. So far 6,000 miles no flats.
Short distance and lower speeds your 14" spare tire is OK.

Jim

I think your idea is about the best for your situation. Putting a spare tire mount under most completed trailers is not a very good or easy proposition. Most trailers are to low to add a tire under there. And i don't like working under things these days.

But I would not be obsessed with changing both tires if you have a flat. So what if it looks a bit funny while you drive to a repair shop. And it will still tow just fine as long as you don't get crazy with the speed. If your walls will take that method of mounting a spare go with it. But I would only put one on anyway.

I'd hate to see all of that wood covered up by tires...

As has been mentioned, I wouldn't worry about running a 12" wheel as a spare. Cars are fine with space savers, why not your trailer? It just needs to get you to a repair shop.

If you're going to mount it on the side, could you make up a cover? maybe a matching wood one?
