exterior coverings

Postby Cap't Jonny » Sat Jan 07, 2012 12:09 pm

I have been thinking about whether or not to strip the exterior of my Grasshopper clone and re skin it. I thought it would be nice to do it in aluminum. When I started pricing the stuff and also checking sizes it seems that this could be very expensive. The Filon only comes in 8ft wide . my trailer is 5x5x10 approx so that would mean about 40 ln ft. to cover everything with 30% waste. Aluminum seems like it would also get quite expensive. with approx 200 sq ft to cover.

With that in mind would anyone like to comment on different exterior coverings and their relative cost.

I drove my trailer to the scale at the dump yesterday and with it hooked to the truck it weighed in at 1080 lb. empty . I am guessing about 80 lb tongue weight by how hard it is to lift the tongue so maybe 1000 for the trailer. I wouldn't want to add much more that 100 lbs or so for the skin if possible.

Can't reuse the aluminum siding as it is full of dents and holes. by the time I remove the plastic chimney that is useless and broken it is going to look like franken trailer.

Another question

What would cause one tire to wear heavily only on the inside. The previous owners supposedly put 2 new tires on it before their 5000 mi surf safari. one is worn evenly and the other is worn almost to the cords on the inside. the outside has average tread wear.

It is so tempting to just start tearing into things but I still have to use my garage as a cabinet shop to make a living and I don't to start something and then just let it sit. I really want to try it out camping first.

Look at what I do with aluminum Siding.

Pay NO ATTENTION to the MAKE YOUR OWN BRAKE links.

Renting one is Much easier and the scrap making the brake will cost you 2-3 times what it should.

If you can fold paper, you can do this.
