How to Weight my Trailer

Postby goteeguy » Sat Apr 14, 2012 10:34 am

I've seen many posts about people using a bathroom scale to weigh their trailers. I've Googled this many times, and have only found how to calculate your tongue weight. How do people calculate the gross trailer weight using a bathroom scale????

Thanks,
Ken

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking for. Do you mean the "total weight"? because "gross trailer weight" is the most weight your trailer can carry. That is probably determined by your weakest link, be it your tires, axle, tongue, etc. Total weight can be done with a bathroom scale, but I took the easy route and went to a truck scale. I needed a certified weight to get my registration and the certified truck scale was the easiest.

Oops... my bad! Yes, I meant "total weight", not "gross trailer weight".

How to Weight my Trailer

I put the tongue jack and 2 wheels on 2x4s then measured each of the three points with a bathroom scale, replacing the 2x4 with the scale.

Add all 3, and you have your trailer's weight.

if there is a scrap metal dealer near you they work all of their sales by weight in and weight out, they have scales you drive over for the steel at the yards I have been to. Give them a call and see if you can show up right at opening on some slow day of the week (a rainy day is usually slower), they probably would want the free nickle tour also. if they won't do that for you, take some scrap metal in pulling the trailer, go home unhitch, cash in some more scrap, ask for the vehicle total weights from both times.
