A Real Sheepherder Wagon

Postby Engineer Guy » Sun May 20, 2012 9:04 pm

There's a number of Sheepherder Wagons around us in W. CO.. This one happens to be positioned by an Antique Store in Town. However, others are still in use every season.

I thought folks here might enjoy it.

Several years ago wife & I along with a couple of grandaughters spent several days exploring the NF on the Uncompahgre Plateau west of Montrose. Came upon a large flock of sheep & a couple of the older 'round top' sheepherder wagons complete with crooked stovepipes. The shepherds appeared to be several young 'hispanic' types with the accompanying dogs, ponies, & such. We took several pix but they're still in slide format & I'm not even sure where they are stored. The girls were fascinated with the wagons 'til they got a whiff of the odor from all the sheep & then lost interest pretty quickly. Nice pic Engineer Guy

I had a friend since childhood he was a member of the local old timer's club
group of people who try to keep alive the old way of farming and the old machinery used
he had a sheepherders wagon the old round type complete with bunks and stove he used it
for his kids and grandkids at the fair and the old timer's days when he passed it was sold at
auction for over $7000 as it sometimes happens a biding war broke out and it finally went to
a musuem up-state Ohio.

I was out on the desert last weekend. There was several bands of sheep, each with a herder and a round top sheep camp, 4 wheel trailer with hay for the horse, a herding dog or two an 2 or 3 guard dogs. The white ones that are raised to think they are sheep. I forgot their breed. But they don't herd only protect the sheep.

We live p/t line-of-sight to the Plateau area 'Nobody' mentions above. With so much BLM Land around us, there are 'Old School' Sheepherders, and their Gear, around every Season. Indeed, I like to run our Pooch on some BLM Land line-of-sight out our Kitchen Window. However, in the past few weeks, I could see a large Sheep Water Tank on a Trailer, and the curved roof Sheepherder Wagon parked out there. So, we pass on going there during these times. The Sheep graze down arid BLM areas soon enough, so they move along to other Land.

My Wife got 'stuck' in a Sheep 'Roundup' Drive a few days ago while heading to the lil Town the pic above was taken in. You just drive through them very slowly. No harm. No foul.

The Labor Pool of choice around us the last few years, for the Fruit Orchards and Sheepherding, are Peruvians. Very distinctive features: long, sharp Noses and almost-Aztec Facial features. With them, they bring some really serious Dogs: Kuvasz. They look like ~150 lb., pure white Retrievers. They will rip your Heart out and show it to you before you die [so to speak]. Any 'interlopers' are seen as enemies to be dispatched quickly. So, we have it on good advice to avoid them, and let them do their work.

The ~5,000 Acre Ranch below us has some 50 Coyote Skeletons wired together, hanging from a huge Tree. Their Dogs kill Coyotes like they're stuffed Toys. Impressive, regardless of what one might think of all this...

Thumbs up on the 'SheepStream' comment. Poifect.
