Can we talk about fabric.

Postby Forrest747 » Tue May 01, 2012 2:08 pm

I am planning on using a fabric over the seam between the hatch and roof/wall. thinking a black fabric and use snaps to keep in place while going down the road. I also plan on using snaps over the door and side of the doors to keep the side tent in place.

I am not sure what type of canvas or vinyl to use. thinking a light weight yet sturdy fabric for the tent yet the hatch fabric something like canvas but i really dont know. this is to help keep the water out of the seam if possible and look.

well one easy to find material that will hold up very well, is sunbrella. it is what boat awnings are made of.

Hehe...I was going to suggest Sunbrella as well. It's not cheap, but it's pretty well the standard for boat covers, biminis, etc.
If memory serves, there's a pretty hefty markup on that stuff and on upholstery foam. You might be pleasantly surprised by getting a quote to have all your stuff made for you.

I don't know if it would work for you. But I was going to try and use some ripstop nylon to make a canopy for a trailer when we get to that point.

My son asked if we were going to have canvas on the doors and i said probally not. would not want someone to snap us in the trailer. well he said we could use magnetes like he saw on TV. well thanks to tivo he showed me a commercial where a screen door is closed by magnets. he might have something there. have the fabric of the door held in place over the gap with magenets. he has been assigned to build and test this option.

Is this what you had in mind?

This is the Fire Hose I used to cover the gap between my hatch and the body of the tear. It is fire hose cut lengthwise, I fastened it down with aluminum flat stock and self drilling 1 inch screws with a little butel tape to water proof. I Painted it red with Krylon for plastics.

It should channel water off to the sides of the tear.

Nancy that is what i needed thank you. the girls took me shopping and i bought some nice vinyl about 4 yards of it and that will be used to trim all the gaps in teh doors and hatch. I also have the plan to trim the interior windows with vinyl will be nicer than anything i could do with wood. this also allows me to keep up with the jeep theme.

I do need advice on how to hem a radius and circle. having never done this before.

Thank you Becky, Ohio State University my alama mater, Alpha Eta Rho. Going to be adding some white in teh form of handprints and teh faux diamond plating in the black. One thing I have notice is that the trailer blocks the rearview mirror so something will have to go there, other than red.

If you search the net on how to hem a curve there is a lot of information available.
