Ahhh, it isn't that bad. I used to live on the northern part of it, before it goes one lane. On one trip over, I was riding shotgun and had a sadistic driver who was my boss. I kept rolling my window down, he kept turning up the heat and driving as fast as he could, with lots of braking. I finally mentioned that I was turning green and might erupt if things didn't improve. He turned down the heat and slowed down a bit.
That road did not wash out when we were cut off from everywhere else. I think it was 96? Our mail eventually was able to make it through by going that way.
When I moved, the moving company driver was refusing to drive to my house. I finally agreed to be a "pilot" car--there wasn't much traffic, and he did bring the truck on up. We met nobody. The worst time is when the rafting folks are going hard down the Salmon River. They tend to drive a bit fast for the conditions.
