GP. and Gary,

Thank you for the detailed response.
I agree, resin stinks, and fiberglass when sanded is nasty stuff...

What is T-2 Tight bond?

The thin tape used did cover very well, it looks very professional.
It did however crack in a number of places, allowing water in the small cracks.
Much like powder coated metal, once water gets behind the finish, because it is so strong you can't see any damage occurring.
The damage is however, ongoing and gets worse and worse over time until the rotted wood can no longer support the cover layer and it cracks and fails.

I like the general idea of covering an entire plywood panel with one sheet of something, but perhaps a thicker material, or multiple layers of a thinner one would help, though the stress cracks I've found were all on corners and around windows so maybe just multiple layers on the corners/stressed areas would do it.

Is the latex primer extra sticky?
Any idea if the latex primer can be used over the oil based top coat, and then another layer of oil placed over the new cloth?

Thanks for the tips and help!

Rob

T2 = Titebond 2

Rob , honestly I’d stick with the oil based products , since you have that underneath already ... not good to mix types ...
Multiple reinforcing strips is always a good idea on high stress areas, then a covering over all that too for the most secure job ... ;) A thinner overall covering would still protect all the flat areas.
Some primers are made to go over oil based finishes and are sticky enough for attachment of fabric ... Best read the can first ... I always do !
There’s no place like Foam !

Rob the zinser bullseye doesn't seem to be stickier but it is a pain to get off your hands once it is dry. Last summer I painted a west wall of a house with metal siding that had had problems holding paint before. The owner supplied the paint and said that the paint store told him it would stick to anything. the original paint had fallen off years ago he had oil base primed it than painted it before and it fell off after 4/5 years so we tried Zinser this time I'm still waiting to see how it holds up. Looks good after a year. Hope it stays on.
I had used the Zinser on pre finished wood work in a rental and it work well for the couple of years that I saw it, the owner sold the rental units so I lost track of it after that.
Rule of thumb as GPW says is to try it on a small place first if you have the time.

You can also check around for household hazardous waste recycling in your area for paint. Our local drop off location will allow anyone to "shop" the warehouse for items they will use. The price is as cheap as it gets, free. They are just trying to get it to someone that will use it rather than throwing it away.Thay have paint in 5 gallon buckets mixed from small quantities of dropped off paint.
