Insurance Question

Postby nrody » Mon Jul 16, 2012 11:15 am

I called my insurance agent this morning to find out how to get replacement value insurance. My agent had no clue how to value the trailer and said "I'll call you right back". When she called me back she said that my insurance carrier had no idea how to value and that I should get an appraisal from somewhere that could put a price on it. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it? Where should I get an appraisal?

I'm of no help here, but curious about the responses and subscribing.

I was thinking of finding comparable purchasable teardrops on the market and then expecting my insurance company to apply a certain percentage reduction for being home made.

EDIT: Some more information found when searching:

Geico has it as an assumed value of 3k. I should up it to 5k. The value is whatever you say it is worth, but your paying based on that number.

I had a certified car appraiser appraise my trailer.
That was acceptable to my insurance company (Farmers).

Per my insurance agent anything I tow with my truck is covered for liability, however coverage for replacement for the trailer requires a seperate policy. They asked me to get an appraisal so I contacted Mike at SoCal Teardrops.
I was able to take my trailer to So-Cal Teardrops and Mike and Gabe were very helpful. They are working with my insurance company for the appraisal information. Hopefully the policy will be in place by the time we leave for the IRG.

My insurance agent asked me how much I wanted to insure it for. I thought for a moment and said 10K and they said OK.

Of course, the more it's worth the more you are going to pay monthly but the cost wasn't that great.

Ok the tear is insured. I went to a body shop nearby and they sent photos to my agent. We are ready to hit the road. It seemed like a lot of work to get it insured but I am sure it is worth it. I would hate to have to pay out of pocked for repairs and or replacement. I am not sure why they needed an appraisal and the photos, they could have just taken my word for what value I put on it but it is all taken care of now.
Quick thanks to SoCal Teardrops for helping me.
Happy roads to all :)
