I was taught that the first time you use an abbreviation in a communication it is good that the first time you spell it out. Like where I use to work for a computer company there was the abbreviation of POS. I often got some communication where it took some searching to determine if they meant. Point of Sale or Parts Only Service or Piece of S@#%.

Now if I see EMT yes I will immediately think Emergency Medical Technician as I am not in electrical contracting.

I would think that in the forum TV and TD is pretty universal and most people will get use to that after a bit, but even then I do often spell them out the first time in a post. Unless the thread is strongly talking about TV's and TD's.

And the lovely thing with TLA is that it is of course a TLA itself. It's like a word version of those Russian dolls....

one of my other favorite forums is Airliners.net, they automaticly add the real name to posts for the for airports and airlines, if I typed SQ into my post it would be highlighted and if you hovered over it with the mouse a box pops up to let you know that SQ is southwest airlines, or 5X is UPS, or that KEWR stands for Newark, NJ Liberty International Airport. Very helpful when reading about some airline or airport I'm not familiar with, of course being software driven it also ends up highlighting some things that don't apply, but mostly it is helpful.
Another Forum I like Forestry Forum has a group of people who insist on calling out door wood boilers (owb to almost every heating forum) OWF (out door wood furnace) as after all the water isn't boiling, of course that flies in the face of every heating professional in the world as they all know if it heats water it is a boiler (no matter what temp the water is), and if it heats air it is a furnace. Kind of like the EMT having two different meanings depending on what forum you're on.
