Fun thread! My 50 lb. Border Collie knows the passenger's seat is reserved for him whether I have other guests or not! I've already patched the leather twice where his claws dig in. As for the laws requiring they be restrained... I've never had a problem and he goes literally EVERYWHERE with me. I think it's just one more thing they can hold against you if they have a reason to dislike you. :x I'd bet at least 50 percent of Californians are breaking some rule at any given time. Sometimes I vacation in Nevada just to feel like I have a slight sense of liberty left!
Those people that constantly need a pat on the back to feel proud of thier accomplishments typically don't go very far...

Jeff, asseenontv.com has a pet seat cover I can vouch for 100%. Two of them were $30 and will fit across a small SUV bench each. It's waterproof and washable, but not largely uncomfortable. You can also cut them to size. This should save your leather!

This was at least 35 years ago. The girl I was dating was complaining about the dog riding between us in the pickup cab.
I sugested she could get out and ride in the back if she had a problem with the dog.
That was the last time I ever saw her.

I have no dogs now, but when I did, it was a ShihTsu and he rode in the back seat. My parents had a Chihuahua and they made a padded platform just behind the passenger seat, at window level where she could ride and see outside. She spent most of their trips on her "observation platform".

Sometimes I pretend to be normal. But, that gets boring...so I go back to being me.

 A man has got to have priorities!

Our dogs rarely leave the place but if they do it's in the back seat of the pickup. At least until they try to creep up between the front seats lol.
