Tow mirror recommendations needed

Postby Robin Bobula » Thu Jun 28, 2012 5:49 am

We will be towing our 7 x 18 cargo trailer with our 1999 GMC Suburban. I really wanted the slide on tow mirrors by Cipa, but it seems they don't make any that will fit my vehicle. :(

What universal mirrors have people had success with? I'm hoping for something that will hold well, and will not require removal of my regular mirrors. It would be great if they could be purchased locally, or from a source that will ship quickly. We want to take our first trip in about two weeks.

Thanks much!

I'm not sure what mirrors you have on your Suburban, but If they're the long-thin type, like on my '98 GMC 1500 pickup, then the slide-on Cipa's work ok. I was doubtful when I first clamped them on, afraid they would fall off or vibrate so much as to be unviewable (a problem with some "universals" I'd tried on my '69 Chevy pickup). But, they have worked flawlessly for about 5k miles; I thought I'd lost them once (messy garage syndrome) and obtained another pair from my friend, the GMC's previous owner. He'd used that pair for years, no problem, and had forgotten that he had them when I acquired the GMC for my wife. My wife likes them so much, she would leave them on full-time. I recommend them.

I have a pair of those for my 2000 Silverado which I used when towing my 5th wheel but they have been on a shelf in the garage for several years now as I got rid of the trailer which required them. They did fit my truck well and looked good in place, in fact I often left them on the truck after towing until my next trip to a drive in window or ATM...... They are worth their weight when towing a wide trailer.

Walmart has some clip on tow mirrors. You can check the stock of your local store on line, then see and touch the mirrors before you buy. The body on your cargo trailer is only about 6 inches wider than your suburban.

I use Fit System 3891 towing mirrors on our 2003 Honda CRV when pulling our 13 foot Uhaul camper. Don't need them when pulling the teardrop. They have a ratchet strap system that works good. $21.98 each from Amazon.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback!

As it happened, we ran out of time before our trip, and just tried it without towing mirrors. We couldn't see what was behind us, but we could see enough to make sure the trailer was centered in the lane, which was the most important thing. Wouldn't want to tow anything wider, though, and we may still look into some of the suggested options for the future.
