Where to find good deals on foam board insulation

Postby eddie6775 » Tue Jul 24, 2012 7:47 pm

Hello, This may be an odd question to some of you but when seeing how much foam bard was I almost had a stroke! Up until now, I've managed to be very thrifty in my trailer building endeavours. The frame, ply wood, shower, tile, bed frame and dinette along with tools and supplies it just less that $300.00 (I'm a good barterer and picker!) The 1.5" thick foam insulation is going to cost almost $400.00!!!!!! I only know of Lowe's and H.D. carrying it around here.

Is there a suitable alternative? Not much luck on Craigs list ....hmmm....

Around here a lot of schools and flat roofed commercial buildings are being re-roofed with foam sheets under membrane roofing. Might check jobsites or roofing contractors for dumpster diving scraps.

I've been watching for that kind of stuff..That's a good idea! Glad we both thought of it! There IS allot of construction around my area too as a result of last year's flooding (Binghamton and NE PA) but so far there's allot of competition. My area is very impoverished so any thing that's worth any thing is taken. But I keep asking around. Most of the people I talk to are using fibre glass as it's cheaper but I imagine I might just get lucky.

But then with the effort I'd spend on hunting, it might be easier just to go and spend.........ugh....money

I am SO cheap!

I wonder what kind of businesses use allot of styrofoam that they can't get rid of hmm? That might be a thrifty alternative,

Tractor supply has bunches when they get a load of CarryOn trailers in. I'm pretty sure most of the trailers at the big box stores get their trailers from the same. Might be worth a shot - they can only say no.

I am the estimator for a wall panelization plant we prebuild wall panels for homes hotels, assisted living center etc. We throw away the window and door cutouts and trimmings. A days production "waste" fills a pickup. This is clean and unused and we give it away to avoid the dump fees. Go to a good lumberyard and ask where the nearest panelization operation is and go ask. We run absolutely free ads to dispose of it on a regular basis and are glad it's going to a good cause.

So far I'm reading some pretty good stuff! I was in Vestal yesterday and stopped in the Tractor Supply to ask about foam from the shipping crates. The guy told me sure! help your self to the pile around back ...So without hast I went around to take a look and found the MOTHER LOAD! For free! I'll see about asking about the wall fabrication left overs, as it seems like a bit less cutting I'll have to do but I got lots of foam now! :D

I might just pull this project off for under a grand ;)
