Got a '72 Field and Stream project trailer.

Postby doug hodder » Sun Oct 07, 2012 5:45 pm

I came back from probably my last camping trip for the year and there was a note on my back door.

There is a gentleman that walks his dogs and has visited me and showed a lot of interest in my builds. He acquired a '72 Field and Stream. We had talked at length about what it needed and his intent was to do a total resto on it. However, he got a bit concerned when he saw just how bad it really was and didn't want to get that involved. He got it all stripped on the interior, saved all the parts (I hope). It needs a total rebuild or custom build on it.

He's had a life changing accident, and he left me a note that said..."come and get it, it's free". I got the title, current registration, all the glass is good, has a sink, ice box, stove/oven, water tank, wheel tubs. Floor is rotten.... I'm not a real fan of the profile, so will spend some time coming up with more of a canned ham shape to it or bread loaf. My bread loaf ideas are going to take a long time and a lotta dough to complete however. I'm also not a fan of the 70's dark brown paneling look that this trailer had. It's 12'6" long, 78" wide so it's only .5" wider than my Nomad, which fits behind the Ranger great.

I'll drop him a note and let him know that it went to a good home and will be built in his wife's memory.

Skins are all good, so is front rock guard.

This rear corner is bowing out.

Wavy wall, water connection was leaky causing rot.

parts thrown in, wedgewood stove, ice box, water tank, sink

unistrut piece supports roof currently, snow load sagged it.

water damage.

check the gaps and the staples! This type of construction is very typical when tearing apart a trailer like this.

I'm still unpacking from my trip, so will maybe clean it out and crawl under it next weekend. All the crap inside will heat the shop during it's remodel. Doug

It will think its gone to camper heaven if you display your usual craftsmanship on this rebuild. Should make a really nice camper.

So is this going to get a custom stove? 8) Can't beat the price. He gave it to the right person to get it done right.

Probably no on the stove. It's got a stove/oven combo...If I can get it to run. This one will probably get sold so the nice Coleman stays with me. I'll take a couple of side profile pics and then lay them on a light table and see if I can trace a new profile I like. Then maybe if I'm lucky I can scrounge enough good aluminum out of the roof to patch in on the sides to cover up the fact that I moved a window in the rear. Doug

Nice trailer Doug ... we are all excited to see what you come up with on this project.

Tell your friend that he's in our prayers. Those life changing experiences often take lots of time, patience, family, and friends to overcome. We wish him the best.
