Mutt and Jeff TVs

Postby Riptide » Thu Oct 18, 2012 10:26 am

I have a 2011 Honda Fit - 117 horses with manual transmission that I am thinking of using to pull my weekender style trailer (9 by 5 and estimate finished weight of 900 to 950 pounds). This would not be for driving up into the mountains, for that, I have the GMC 2500....great truck that could tow the car with the trailer attached, and not even notice there was any weight back there.

The only problem with the big pickup happens when I pull up to the pumps....man that thing is thirsty! Thirsty is no problem when I am hauling the dog to the vet or plywood to the house, but 650 miles to the outer banks ((650/10)*3.50= ouch). The Fit gets better than 35 MPG verses about 10. I just don't want to damage a car I really like, and a couple of hundred bucks additional on a round trip is cheaper than fixing a damaged car.

So, is anyone here towing with one of these and how well do you like it? Thoughts? Suggestions? Am I out of my mind? :?

Thanks,
Kerry

According to Honda, towing anything here in the US with a Fit will void yoru warranty.

Oddly enough, overseas the car is lsited with a tow weight of 1,000 lbs.

Yep, I have a brochure listing the tow weight allowed as 450 kg without trailer brakes and 1000kg with from the UK (they put in smaller engine too), but from Lands End to John O'Groats is less than 900 miles so they just don't crank on the miles and the speed we do over here. The US has way too many lawyers willing to jump in to sue a company as well....this car will be out of warranty within the next year or so and I keep my vehicles a long time and put miles on them.

Build a light weight tiny teardrop. It'll look perfect behind the Fit.

At first blush I would suggest the Pico-Light, but that might be a bit too small for you.

I have something on the drawing board called the Nano-Light, which is a bigger version of the Pico-Light that Andrew did. I'll let you know when it's ready.

Meanwhile, you could also check out the Nano-Weekender, which is a little more aggressive looking, but the same size and the Nano-Light.

Check out the Nano-Weekender here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=52724

And Andrew's Pico-Light here: http://www.angib.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/t ... tear58.htm

Mike...

P.S. And of course any of the foamie builds would work.
The quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten, so build your teardrop with the best materials...
