Cabinet latch

Postby Shadow Catcher » Sat Dec 15, 2012 4:30 pm

We have a problem with the upper cabinet doors (top hinged) in the galley coming open during travel allowing canned goods etc. What I am looking for is the type of latch that unlocks when you push the door, I do not even know how to hunt for one, and have tried, push latch push to unlock...

I found some at a local home center recently. Actually a magnetic catch, and push to release it.

I have found that most push to open latches, do not have a lot of holding power.
A simple manual latch might be better.
You sound like you want something that will engage everytime you close the door so you can never forget to latch it.
But, something that is easily released when you go to open the door.
Sometimes "Simple " is best!
Wish I could suggest a magic product??....... but I am sure someone here on the Forum can.

I sounds like the type of latch that I used to have in my old entertainment center. When trying to find what they might be called, I came across this - http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page ... te=ROCKLER, They state it works well for trailers. Good luck!

(OH - try Googling "magnetic latch" - there are a lot more out there!)

I was just looking at those yesterday at my local lumber yard (for almost half the price). They appear to be ideal IMHO. More than adequate strength for a cabinet door, though a full pantry of canned goods might be pushing it.

As an aside, Accuride makes a full extension drawer slide with the same push-lock action. Very nice. Ideal for my TD. I'm away from my desk to post the model number but will try to post it later.

I was interested to find that one of the areas these are used in for earthquake areas in keeping drawers closed.

Here's what I used and it works very well. The door is held closed until you pull on the cabinet door knob.

However, that being said it's tricky to install on cabinet doors with rail and stile construction. You also need overlay doors instead of inset and everything needs to line up just right. Probably not the right choice for adding to existing cabinet doors. I built my cabinets around the hardware.

Bruce I had played with a number of possibilities but I am stuck with the cabinet as is unless I add new holes so the push latch which will initially be attached using VHB tape to try it out and align will be it. I am going to order tomorrow.

Though this will not help you with your problem. When I built my cabinets the ones for canned goods I made the bottom style ( or is that the rail?) Proud of the shelf by about 1/4 inch. The top hinged doors, home built mag latch come open but I have yet to have a can jump out and I have been on some mighty bad roads.
