Anybody Built This?

Postby TJinPgh » Mon Jul 30, 2012 11:24 am

Was looking through E-bay and came across some of the usual listings for plans. Don't normally pay them much mind but one caught my eye.

I looked through the design library and didn't find it. Was wondering if anybody knew what it was or if they'd build one.

Couple of things mentioned in the ad.

Says it weighs around 650 pounds. No frame. Axle, springs and tongue bolted to the floor. (I'd put this on a regular frame).

5'x10'x6.5'

If you noticed the two different bed pics, it's because it's apparently done as bunk beds in the back. One bed on the floor. Another a few feet up. Or, done as a single bed that's raised.

It mentioned the old Midget and Widget designs in the ad. Obviously, this is neither of those (so far as I can tell, anyway).

Closest thing I could find in the library was the Rimple. But, that would need to be modified a good bit to come up with this.

Was just curious if anybody had seen or built one. If so, what the general design was called. And, if there are plans or a build thread around anywhere for it.

To be honest, I really don't want to end up spending $30 or $40 in a bidding situation for plans that I may not even use.

As simple as that is, I would think those few pix, a bit of imagination and, maybe, building a scale model from cardboard would be enough. There are no cabinets, no galley hatch or no interior, to speak of. There are enough build threads and other plans available here that coming up with a clone of that trailer would be easy

Only thing I don't like about it is the lack of windows for the bottom bunk. But that is easy enough to fix.

yeah, I noticed that as well. Not good if you're even remotely claustrophobic. Although, if you are, I suppose you're not looking at a TD anyway.

If I were building it I'd probably be looking at the single bed set-up anyway. Raised bed with storage underneath.

It seems like a pretty simple design. Would like to see the wall construction a bit more.

My guess is that he used ply to cut out the curved spars for the roof.

I'd probably insulate with foam panels and skin the inside with either luan or fabric. Probably skin the outside with canvas.

Could probably do the whole thing as a foamie construction and save quite a bit of weight.

Yeah, I thought about that. Built the way he did that thing had better have some really good sealant or else he's going to be replacing parts before he knows it.

It's very similar to the Wanderer in the design library, and the Puffie and the Retro-Kamper builds.

Sorry to bring up an old tread, but this sure would make a fine fishing cabin for a guy.
It sure looks simple to build... add a 5000 btu window a/c in the back, a 1500-watt ceramic heater, a Honda generator and head to the backwoods. :D

Isn't that a spin off from Steve Wolverton's Puffin?

It's 5' x 10'... but you can build it any size you want.

Think I'd add a little angle/point to the front end, maybe 18" to 24" to take away the wind hitting from it straight on. :)

Cowboy , that is a Serious consideration , especially amongst the “Foamlings" as we’ve already had one cross wind related “incident" so far .... due to too tall and narrow proportions ... :o Take that same trailer profile and make it as wide as it is tall and the problem would be much reduced... more room inside too ... that’s always good ...

The good part is the rig can be made wider, shorter or longer to the liking of the builder. The axle can be configured many ways also. I've seen these plans on ebay way over a year now, and they continue to sell. More choices for creative minds... :)
