Backyard camping?

Bob and I will be taking possesion of our newly built TD, early this spring. We've been thinking about were it will be stored between camping trips----either in one bay of the two car garage, or outside next to it. I got the idea of parking it in the back yard, amongst and hidden by our evergreen and various tree forest (just beyond the garage). There's privacy fencing and our "forest" to shield the view from neighbors. We probably should check with planning/zoning for permission, but it's apparent that the parking of RV's, the placement of sheds and some other things aren't firmly enforced (if such rules exist).

Bob and I are gardening fanatics, and have a botannical garden vibe going on in the backyard (it's a double, deep lot). We have a hosta glen, shade garden, prairie garden, sun garden, the woods section, paths through them all and a two waterfall pond. Lots of birds visit the yard due to the running water, houses and feeders. Very little grass, except in the front yard. We're thinking it would be fun, and we'd get a lot more enjoyment out of our TD, if we could occasionally sleep outside, or "backyard camp" between trips.

Anyone else use their TD as an outside room of their home?

No, that wouldn't be much fun. I've lived in more city-like environments where I wouldn't sit on my front porch (noise, crime, etc.) let alone sleep in the backyard. We're in a more rural area, so my question was geared toward's those in the same situation. I realize some areas have rules that are enforced more stringently than ours are, i.e, no parking of RV, campers, trailers on lots, etc.

When we were looking for a home a few years back, our requirements were simple. It had to be in a township (outside city or village), no HOA, and camper storage friendly. We found such a place, and when we checked with the township officials, their only restriction was that a camper could not be stored or parked forward of the front wall of the house. We had a popup when we moved here, and we now have a TT.

We had a concrete pad poured beside the garage, and have used the TT as an extra bedroom from time to time.

The back yard had been used as a campsite for the PU, and when Hurricane Ike cut our power for 9 days, we ran the refrigerator on propane. The people in the ...ahem... gated community behind us probably don't like it, but we don't belong to their stinkin' HOA.

So, yes, backyard camping can be fun and practical.

When I finish I suppose I could. I'd have to figure out where. It's half a mile back to the property line. I likely should avoid the pastures where the cows are. They like to rub up against things. The corner of a TT would be perfect for their scratching. I can just imagine the effect of a 1500lbs cow leaning and scratching against the corner of the TT.

When I first took over the farm I lived in a 16'L x 12'W box in the corner of the hay barn. The shower was in a corner of a cattle barn. I even had a water heater for it. The stall was a bit drafty as I only had the shower head mounted on the wall, and a pallet on the ground as the floor. Winter use was restricted to above freezing days.

I'm fortunate enough to be able to camp in some excellent campgrounds (no power), a couple of state parks (one with power and one without), or boondock within just a few miles of my house.



This is looking from the "highway" toward one of my favorite boondocking spots next to the pine trees in the center of the picture. Since this is less than 10 miles from my front door (closer than the grocery store) my driveway is often blown right out of consideration.

Upon further reflection, I guess that this is my backyard ...

Junction? Isn't that east of Beaver, Utah on Highway 89? I lived in Utah for 11 years, first in Cedar City, then St. George. Beautiful country, especially in the mountains. Your photo brings back memories.

Bob and I have our favorite state parks (with wooded, secluded camp sites), all are 3 hours away and to the southwest. There's a state park just 29 miles away, but it seems everyone we know (and want to get away from) go camping there, it's always crowded and the campsites are open and too close together. We do have some closer possibilities we're going to take a drive through and check out. Then there's a couple of state and national forests in northern Wisconsin where you're allowed to boondock. And if all else fails, there's a lovely, way out in the boondocks, primitive campground, (no electric, I don't remember if it had a water spigot--it had an outhouse though) in the upper penn. of Michigan.

The way we have it planned, we're going to be camping a lot (during the middle of the week), when the campgrounds are less likely to be crowded, or we can at least get the jump on our favorite sites. When we're home, or on the weekends, we can use the TD like a sleeping porch. No campfires or other gear required.

Yep ... That's the place. The picture is on highway 153 at the cattleguard just before dropping off into the Piute Valley.

Come on over ... well maybe let it warm up a little. At 9000' that little camping spot is not the friendliest place in the winter. How about June?
