Anyone have plans for a homemade roof top cargo box?

Postby driftwood » Sat Jan 19, 2013 9:41 am

Considering building one from wood and aluminum to match the wooden tear, just dont like the way the plastic ones look. Would mount on roof rack. Anybody tried this, have any photos or plans they could share?

Wood and aluminum would most certainly be more secure! I'm going to be following this.

I made mine for the trip,Sits down inside the roof rack a 1/2 inch off the roof and extendes front and rear past the cross braces. Worked well for what I made it for, was all scraps from the build
Not a very good pic,

Your question made me think of this design - you don't want the folding bit, but the basic construction might suit you:

That is pretty cool!

I actually plan on putting mine on top of my 5x8 teardrop trailer on a roof rack. But it will have to be narrow (around 22 inches wide) in order for the vent roof to open. Was thinking of wood sides, stained to match the trailer, with aluminun top. Would need it to be somewhat aerodynamic too.
