Mold in camper

Postby Jst83 » Wed Jan 30, 2013 4:11 pm

Ok my camper has sat outside all winter and water has seaped through the roof and top edge of walls. I haven't finished the ceiling but the walls are finished. It's pretty well across the ceiling and I have a feeling down in behind the wall paneling. My question is there any easy way to battle this or and I screwed. I planned to tear it down to the frame after the summer but wanted to get one more summer out of it.

First, do you have a way of bringing the teardrop into a heated garage to dry out? Second if you can not dry it out you can't stop it from leaking in anymore. My guess is the mold started before this winter. I could be wrong but I did not think mold could grow in the cold of Indiana. If you can get it dried out and fixed so no more water can get in then I would attack the mold. The pictures look like it is mostly wet with some mold. Once it drys out I think you can bleach the mold spots and kill it. A coll to a fire /flood restoration place should be able to confirm this. If that is the worst of it you should be able to get rid of it. If the plywood is delaminating that is another problem. Are your walls paneled or a single piece of 3/4" ? If the walls are paneled I would peal that off. If the ceiling looks like that you can be sure it went down into the walls. That could be bad. Good luck!

Helped remodel a flooded house here in mold country a few years back and bleach will kill the mold that you can get to. I used straight bleach without diluting. If you have or can borrow a dehumidifier it will be a much much quicker job drying out the wet wood.

Dry and stop leak as sugested. Above, borax is the very best cleaner for mold remediation
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is

Ok , I have lived in the South most of my life and I even had a job once cleaning up mold in houses. Use a mixture of 1/4 Clorox and 3/4 water and one tsp dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle. 1. remove everything inside, 2 wear clothes that can get bleached, 3. wear gloves and a protective mask and goggles. 4. pour some on the top where it can leak in over a couple of hours.(days) 5. on the inside use a brush and spray down the area of the mold, spray it down and scrub three times. use old towels to wipe down after each spray scrub , 6. Let dry, use a fan on it over night, two or three days, get it very dry, very dry. &. Spray everything down with Lysol. spray down , sides the floor ect. if you had a mattress be sure to spray it down too and wash it down with the Clorox mixture if it got wet, let dry then spray with Lysol Seal the leak and enjoy your summer camping .

Scott, when they talk about wear a mask it does not mean a painters mask which will do nothing for chlorine. The alternatives are a mask with filter that will take out chlorine, or make sure you have LOTS of ventilation and I for one don't think you can ever have enough. The 3M filter is either a 6009 or 60929. An industrial safety supply should have them and the mask. Or you can do what I did an find a surplus Israeli gas mask on Ebay (made in Germany btw). I used it when de rusting the Saab Sonett with a wire wheel.
