boat trailer question

Postby jmkjr72 » Mon Jan 28, 2013 4:50 pm

we are thinking about building our first camper
i have a boat trailer just sitting here that i could use
the oal of the trailer is 18ft
outside to outside of the fenders looks like 7ft
and the axle is 13.5 feet from the ball or 4.5 feet from the rear
the axle is rated for 3000lbs

would this trailer be something good to start with

tow vehicles will be a 2002 explorer or a 2002 outback 4cl
i know i will be well within the explorer capacity but will have to watch it for the outback

things we need a queen sized bed (im tall)
we would like an inside seating area and possibly a potty
and prefer an inside galley
overall size we are thinking 6-7 foot wide 12 to 14 long
i was thinking with the axle being where its at a rear door with galley and potty in the rear and front bunk

this weekend we are going to sit down with some graph paper and start some floor plans
we will also post in the introduction section when we are together

I'm building on a boat trailer with very similar deminsions:

http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=52767

Cabin is 7' wide x 13-1/2 long with 6' headroom down the center of the dropped floor. Has a full size murphy bed, shower w/ toilet, full kitchen. The extra length on the tonguw will include a tool box and an expanded metal cargo tray.

Originally towed with an Explorer Sport Trac, now have Jeep Liberty w/ factory tow package.

we are thinking about doing something like that
maybe not as tall

is there a better book or disc out there that covers construction technique or even a set of plans that has good build documentation

For building this size of trailer, those plans are as detailed as any I have seen.

There are more detailed plans available for teardrops, but they won't help you much with a trailer this size.
