I'm pretty tall...and I have furry kids

Postby markingold » Mon Jun 20, 2011 4:34 pm

My wife has given me the ok to start shopping for a teardrop trailer (didn't take as much convincing as I thought!) But I am a little concerned with finding one that we can all fit in.

I travel/camp with:
Myself - 6' 5" 220 lbs.
My wife 5' 3" 120 lbs. (Yes, we look funny together)
Diamond - 85lbs. German Shepherd
Kodo - 15 lbs. Shih Tzu

We camp pretty comfortably in a small, 2 pole tent on a queen sized air mattress. But there is enough room between the mattress and the tent wall for Diamond to lay. We all sleep every other night at home on a normal queen sized bed fairly comfortably.

Just curious if anyone else travels with dogs, and is pretty tall...

I'm not terribly handy/crafty, so I'll be buying a manufactured teardrop trailer, and was hoping for some advice from anyone willing to share it. If it turns out a teardrop trailer is not for us, that's disappointing, but I am really interested, and have wanted one since I saw my first one.

Yeah, I've been checking those out. The Silver Shadow sure is sharp too! I was just hoping to find some folks of my stature who sleep in a teardrop semi-regularly and can confirm that it's not horrible! :) I don't expect anything more than mild-comfort, but I would at least like to know that we could all fit inside. :)

Thanks for the quick reply!

JuneBug!

I'd suggest looking at something in the 5x10 size ... Just be sure the bed is long enough and you'll be fine.

I'm 6'4" @ 220# (have been 240#) and I fit comfortably in my custom-bed-length 4x8 (82" long bed) along with my 6' tall girlfriend ... but any pet beside a canary in a cage would be out of the question ... ;) ...!

Good Luck with your search ... there are many quality Mfgs. out there that can-and-will satisfy your needs!

No dogs in the tear with us but I am 6'6" 205lbs and my wife is 5'3" (she wont say) with a 5'9" 120lbs 14 year old daughter that some times sleeps between us in a 5x8 tear. It's tight but doable.

If you all fit in a queen bed at home I think you would be suprised at how big a queen size seems in a teardrop. You can sleep right to the edge because there is no way to fall out.

I have build a 10'x5', 5' high. I am also pretty tall, 6'11", but not heavy. Only 180? (93KG) My wife is 6'3". We have a Dalmation, who fits in the front in his dogbed on the floor. But I have build myself, massuring before building.

Wow H@nk, that sounds like a nice big trailer. I've started looking at some of the various plans, incase I decide to enlist some family members to help build a custom teardrop.

Most of the plans I see boast room for a queen-sized bed, but only have a 72" cabin length.

Does anyone have a link to plans that would fit a 60" x 80" true queen size bed? I don't know how hard it is to alter blue prints, so I would prefer to find some that are already to the specs I am looking at.

Thanks

If you can't find anything in the teardrop catagory then any trailer will do. You don't have to have a Teardrop to camp amongst those of us who do..you're welcome anytime....

haha, I gotcha! I didn't doubt that for a second! I am convinced that I have the resources to build one with the correct plans, I just want to make sure I'm getting good plans, that will fit a true queen bed.

I'm going to start watching out for 5x8 trailers around Muskogee, OK in hopes of picking up a decent used one at a fair price.

We are having a trailer built by Tex's Trailers outside of Ft Worth. Not too far for you to have a look at. Paul is listed under Teardrop Manufacturers and great to work with, just a thought and you can customize.

We have the 5x10 Silver Shadow - they say it's a queen sized bed, but I don't think the length is the same as a standard queen. I'm 5'9, Ed's 5'11 and we're comfortable, but our GSD sleeps in a crate in the van (she thinks 3 in a bed should look like an "H" instead of "III")

Here's the thing, though - if you like the Silver Shadow, you might be able to get Little Guy to make you a 5x10 without the headboard storage area. That would give you probably another 6-8 inches. You'd have to check with them about what to do about a mattress, but I'd give them a call.

Oh, and your marital height differntial isn't as bad as my cousin and his wife - he's 6'5, she's under 5'0.

Thanks Honeask! That might be a great excuse to shoot down to Dallas for a weekend! I am leaning towards a 5x10 trailer with a Grummen type teardrop. I am going to check with some metal shops around here, but I will keep Tex in mind!

Where are you located? There's an amazing 5x10 woodie that's for sale in NY. Ed and I saw it at the Tear Up The ADK this month. If we hadn't already bought a Silver Shadow in the fall, we would have grabbed this one (we seriously considered it anyway).

Anyway - check out http://tnttt.com/viewto ... highlight=

This is an AMAZING TD. Kind of reminds me of the old Chris Craft boats.
