fan idea

Postby 05liberty » Wed Aug 24, 2011 5:55 pm

I have an idea to put out there, like a lot of you I have a fantastic fan and also like a lot of you I find it moves too much air and is somewhat noisy! So I have been thinking that if every 2nd fan blade were removed it would move ½ the amount of air and might not be so loud … what do you think … all comments welcome

You run the risk of unbalancing the fan and making it nosier than it was before and burning out the motor. Not to mention voiding there unbelievable warranty!

The good Part about your idea is that Fantastic fan has a Fantastic Customer Relations Policy.

If you do cut every other blade and it does work.....thats great.

If it doesn't, Fantastic Vent will replace your Blade Free of charge, even the shipping.

For any reason what so ever! Even if you tell them what you did.

Which brings up another suggestion.

Why not Call them and explain your situation. Very nice people.

They may have an answer!

Happy Trails

Or get a pulse width modulation unit and adjust the fan speed to fit need. Based on my experience get one that also adjusts frequency my suggestion is this one http://www.electronickits.com/kit/compl ... UK1130.htm or similar. Or take it out and use a couple of computer case fans. Mine are three speed.

I have 8 computer fans in a regular rv vent hooked to a Pulse Modulation dimmer so that I can adjust the speed as needed. Also put switches so I can run only the fans I need in case my battery is close to dumping. Looks much like the one above. I also built my led lights into the vent.

Didn't someone do a mod on a Fantastic Fan that reduced the speed on all three settings? Seems like I read something about that a while back...

Yes they did. A simple resistor will limit the current draw and effectively reduce the speed of the fan on all speed settings. The problem is finding the correct size resistor to get the performance you want.

Reminds me of the Green Monster land speed car. Art Arfons bought the scrapped jet engine despite that it was missing fan blades and assumed inoperable. (The story I've heard is the blades were deliberately removed to 'insure' the engine could never again be operational, not as wikipedia says because the engine injested a bolt...) He simply removed the opposing blades to balance it out and went racing.

Simply call fantastic fan and tell them that you want to reduce the fan speed and they will send you the correct resistor for free.
Several people on the forum have done this and posted the great customer service and free resistors.

Resistor = energy turned to heat and wasted. That is the prime reason to use PMW.

I'm with Shadow Catcher on this one. I have gone to a lot of trouble and some expense to make my tear very easy on my battery. Planning a trip to Alaska from North Carolina next summer and will need to be self reliant at times. If my money starts getting short I will have to park the tear where there are few extras if any so I won't have to cut my trip short.
