aunti m. ever get a new teardrop afer the tornado?

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

If you ever watch the news, you will see that people are still rebuilding. Rebuilding or repairing a house takes a long time, especially in the best of times when subcontractors are abundant.

When Auntie M. is done with her rebuild (as well as her immediate family's homes), she'll post success picts.

Also there were pictures of it with the top cut off to use for clearing the wreckage. I am assuming that it ending up inverted contributed to the decision.

It isn't that easy, Slow. People need houses to live in first and have to repair or replace the everyday stuff first. Once that is done, there are the money and time factors. It takes extra of both. :(

I am almost tempted to say that if they are capable of quality work, they are not looking for it. BUT, I wont. (or did I?)

In 1998 my town went for a ride, a F4. We were bombarded by "contractors". Most failed to provide, almost all failed to be in business a year later.

Sadly during such times you end up taking what you can find in a contractor......although I have been lucky dealing with some very good out of state contractors after flooding / hurricanes around eastern NC. Some have actually charged less than customary fees and performed quality work.

Seems the only ones to make the news are the dishonest ones.

 :( Thank you for remembering my poor td which is outside still holding stuff we have no room for. Tools and stuff.

The house is down and waiting for the survey team so the basement can be dug. We won't be finished until about Feb. We are blessed to have a great builder who knew his way around the insurance company's stuff. JCDM in Joplin and they will be here a long time. Not new folks. http://www.jcdmhomebuilders.com/Portfolio.html

Check your policy's and know who will build for you if you ever land here. A good architect will certainly be more helpful. Call them first!!!!

For those who are interested this is the plan, or close to it!

We have modified it some to allow the garage to be in the rear on the North side. It is a bit smaller than the original but is a much more spacious design. Will also have a basement with a safe room under it. Joplin is always under threat but our house was 100+ years old. We certainly didn't expect this!

As it goes up I will take lots of pictures. 8) and maybe next year I will have the energy to build the TD back....I sure do miss it! :worship:

had no idea what was going on. just knew you had a mess from a tornado and there was a chance the biggy was gone.

did not mean to raise a ruckus just was wandering if you had thought about a new teardrop or had any new ideas on it was.

slow.

:) Hey it's ok! Not a rukus at all. We are amazed at how slow things are going too. Problem is there are only 2 inspectors here and it will be a slow process. Joplin really doesn't have the money to put on more people as we have a serious loss of revenue and there is still a lot of clean up to do. A lot of small debris is still out there and must be rake up.

Corp. of Engineers making sure the pickup is done right. We barely got down in time for them to do the haul off. Would have cost in the $20,000's to do the haul off and mediation if not for them. Your tax dollars really are working!

Wow! I didn't know that your old house had been totaled. Glad you have a good builder. I had a very good experience with my new house building.
I almost got a double-wide because I was so afraid of getting a bad builder.

You now get to decide where outlets go, and have all new wiring, windows, insulation....new is good. Old is also good, for character.

I couldn't get your design to load. Hope it goes well.

One thing I found out--since I didn't have a large budget, the choices of things like counter tops and flooring were much more limited. For me, that was a GOOD thing.

The emptiness in the clean up picture is so startling. I'm hoping all continues to go well and you are in the new digs come February!

I am wondering what world you're living in. I supply to the construction industry nation-wide and Canada. My "average" customer years in business is over 40 years. They are some of the best in the industry. My business is down 75% and none of my customers have closed their doors yet. These hard working, well run businesses have almost nothing to build.

Your towns 1998 experience has no relevance in todays world.

Let me put it real simple in hard numbers. In 1998 the US averaged 1,621,000 housing starts per month. For the first 6 months of 2011 our average is 557,800 per month.

Do you really believe all the "capable" still have work when 2/3 of the work has gone away?

Sorry to hijack a thread.
