State Road 14 in Southern Utah

Postby Corwin C » Mon Oct 10, 2011 1:20 pm

For anyone visiting South-Central Utah, state road 14 east of Cedar City will be closed for some time in the future. The last report that I received is that the slide is still in motion (it started Saturday before daylight).

This isn't just a cleanup issue, as you can see, the road is GONE.

Wow, had to blink a few times and tilt my head to figure out what I was looking at.

A little gravel and road patch and it will be just fine.

Reminds me of the 1983 Hiway6/89 slide at Thistle burying the railroad, creating a lake and closeing the road for months.

I feel the earth move.

...Sometimes I'm thankful I live in a very flat State

Very pretty place though.

The fix joke here goes, "Just ramp over it." Which means just take a dozer or excavator and push a steep road over the top and down the other side. (kind of a forest road engineer joke)

Nature just wanted to give you a detour. I see the road, just there to the right a bit.

Robfisher, Thanks for that link. I too also thought of the Thistle slide.

The day after they first got a road opened up over it, I went on it on my 1983 Suzuki Katana. The first of the crotch rocket motorcycles. It was almost a racing bike with a license plate.

Any who, the road was mostly a dirt path going over the slide. It was storming, wind and rain. Late March and cold. Bulldozers was pushing rocks around the size of a small house. Rather exciting slipping around in that mud with a mess of cars.

More pictures ... remember not to ever anger or get in the way of Mother Nature. She can definitely ruin your weekend ...

Latest estimates for repairs are looking at late spring 2012 (as always subject to change.)

Corwin,

Thanks for posting the pictures. Looks like you did a bit of hiking to get them. One question, if you don't mind. What is that white stuff in some of the pictures? Could that be SNOW???!!! :o Egad snow on the rooftops already.

From that last picture it looks like that entire section of road is vulnerable to a slide.

First, I can't take credit for the pictures. They came from several sources including co-workers, UDOT, Iron County, and several other sources. Yes, there was several inches of snow Wednesday/Thursday (you can see how hard it was on my garden.)

The slide occured Saturday morning, and I believe that the water was the "straw" that brought the slide down. This section of road has had occasional slides in the past, and has been a maintenance issue for the last year or so, however, nothing to this degree.
