Hey, Slow!
Lake Shasta starts about 75 miles south of the Oregon border on I-5 (practically dead center of the state, East-to-West), and that's where Lakehead and Antlers Campgrounds are.
any chance of avoiding heavy traffic to get to it?
Absolutely! We are far, far away from any major metropolitan area with traffic problems! Depending on how you plan to get here, though, you may encounter some along the way, but nothing like L.A. or San Francisco (or even Sacramento)!
If it were me and I was in a hurry, I'd catch I-80 West to Reno/Sparks, NV, then head north on Hwy 395 towards Susanville, CA (just east of S'ville, Hwy 395 turns into Hwy 36), take Hwy 36 west about 5 miles then turn north-northwest on Hwy 44 to the junction with Hwy 89, turn north and follow it all the way to I-5 at Mount Shasta, then south about 35 miles to the Lakehead/Antlers Rd. exit.
Obviously, there are alternate routes that avoid freeways altogether and the congestion you'd find 'round Slat Lake City and Reno/Sparks, but I've never found either of those cities to be very difficult to get through (and, I've traveled that route a
lot! ...

...).
... and wyoming does not drive in them conditions hardly at all in there life times.
Hey ... I've experienced the snarling traffic situations you have there in WY! I-80 turns into one massive parking lot in blizzard conditions, and those pesky herds of antelope & elk can tie up traffic for what,
minutes? ...

... unless you hit one, that is (I've nailed two antelope and one elk!). I worked the oilfields in WY, UT, & Northwest-CO from '79 to '82, based out of Vernal, UT, so I'm very familiar with how you guys drive out there ...

...
Hope you can make it, Man ... would be good to put a face to the name, ya know! As always, then ...
CHEERS!
