Someone here built a beautiful 10' modernistic...

Postby mikeschn » Sat Jan 28, 2012 11:53 am

Someone here built a beautiful 10' modernistic, and now I can't find it.

Actually, he bought 2 old modernistics, completely took them apart, and measured everything carefully, and then built a new one from that info.

Does anyone remember who that was, and can they point me to that photo?

As I recall, he used a lot of screws to fasten the aluminum sides to the wood.

Mike...

There was someone in Arizona or New Mexico that was into those, can't remember his name but he used the name "deserthawk" here or on tearjerkers site. Jerome or Todd probably knows. The original modernistics didn't have wood under the aluminum, only a piece in the door and the plywood floor.

Yep out of Quartzsite, AZ. Forgot his name and I haven't heard or seen him and his sons in quite awhile.

MIA: Deserthawk & Rose

Postby The Teardrop Nanny » Sat Jan 28, 2012 10:27 pm

That's it! Yes, Deserthawk & his wife, Rose, (& family) attended the IRG in 2008. We had the best time with them! They had two teardrops (daughter's was the Betty Boop) down there on the meadow and traveled together as a family living out of them for quite a while. I hope he comes back on board as his innovative ideas and talented family members added so much to our gathering.

"Tearstream" At a gas station one time some guy at the next pump asked if our trailer was an Airstream, told him "No, it's a Modernistic". His reply was, "Are you sure it's not an Airstream, I'll google it" I didn't bother trying to explain anymore. :? I got in a discussion online with Deserthawk once about whether a new built "Modernistic" was better than an original. I said I'd rather have our original, he said he could build a reproduction better because of modern parts and materials. I agree with his opinion, but we'll keep ours as close to original as we can.

Love the looks of the "Modernistic" posted.
How would an "Original" differ if the same plans were followed??
Sorry for my ignorance.
I am trying to learn here???
Can't wait to find out what you catagorize mine as when I am finished.
Really hope to be accepted once we hit the roads with it this summer.

The original Modernistics had a steel frame that did not extend all the way to the rear of the trailer. The rear lower pan is lower than the frame. Plywood floor and plywood in the door and wood ribs in the hatch. The rest is all aluminum, riveted together with aircraft type rivets, except for the Cub models which were sold in kit form and they were put together with machine screws & nuts. The rear cabin wall and rear pan were one piece of aluminum, the fenders are aluminum. The shape is easily duplicated, but I don't know if anyone has exactly reproduced the method of construction. Our original has it's faults for sure such as the door hinge will leak if towing in the rain, and there is no insulation or interior, but that's what they were and we have restored it as best as we could considering what we had to work with and what had been butchered up on it. It's a matter of modern comfort & conveniences, or true vintage, we went with the latter. Bob

Met Deserthawk at IRG. He said he and sons were planning on cranking a few out for sale at the time. Perhaps the economy got in the way.
