Battery powered LED lights

Postby BillZ » Tue Jun 26, 2012 4:26 pm

I was doing a search to find battery powered LED lights for the Tear and came across these:

It was hard to find little wireless LED lights that could be manually turned on and off. Most come on by motion sensors. These are powered by 3 AA batteries, they can be pointed in any direction and should be plenty of light for inside a Tear. I plan to stick one over each of our heads. I also got a larger light for the Galley. Any others tried something like this?

Anyway, it seemed to be a great solution for non-wired Tears. I have a simple 2 outlet set-up in mine but we frequently camp in campgrounds with no electric service. The batteries should easily last a season and I doubt you will ever need to change the bulb. I will post a review once I get them and try them out.

Those do look interesting. How long will they last on a set of batteries?

The one I ordered for the hatch also takes 3 AA's and has a listed estimate of 80 light/hours. That should easily last a season. It's also water resistant! :D

The swivel lights I ordered for the interior should last plenty long. My wife and I need a light in the Tear no more than 10 or 15 minutes on the nights we use it so I would be very surprised if the batteries didn't last a whole season. they also have a dim and bright setting that adds another variable. I asked for a rough estimate of light-hours on a set of batteries for the swivel lights in the question/answer section to see if anyone can give me an idea. If they provide anywhere near what the other one does then I should be fine.

4 LEDs should run a Loooong time on 3 AA batteries ... I wouldn’t even worry about it ...

That's sounds like my wife and me; one of the key reason I'm going use my 12V drill battery to run my lights. I'll also be using a computer power supply when an electrical hook up is available. The 110v power can also recharge a single battery in 45 minutes.

I have a few photos in my build thread.

Thanks Jim! Those are some great ideas!

Becky, don't order any of the swivel lights just yet! I accidentally bought too many and will give you a deal. I can probably also drop them off since I come out your way occasionally for work.

I've been using those a year so far on first set of batteries....still bright and going strong. Put them behind us overhead for night time use...I really like the way they swivel.

Sorry, I don't have a pic of them on, but it's the typical 'blue-white' light that many leds put out.

This one http://www.lowes.com/pd_331497-3-72445_4294720386__?productId=3364054&Ntt=utilitech
(Utilitech $12.98 from Lowe's).....it puts out a nice bright, warm white light, powered by 4 batteries.

I have this one over my table. It has a magnet behind which allows you to remove it and use it as a portable light too. The magnet holds it up very well (I've never had it fall off while traveling)

Happy trails :)

After seeing some of these lights I'm rethinking my plan of hard wiring lights in my ToyBox. AA batteries are so cheap! And...the lighting plan can change depending on how I progress on finishing the camper.

Battery powered LED lights

Postby Verna » Wed Jun 27, 2012 8:22 pm

Bill, thanks for the info. I've been trying to figure out some small lights, and I think these will work just fine.

I got the lights in the mail yesterday and just installed them. I think they will work out great! They are just right, not too dim or too bright. They also seem to be decent quality. You can screw them in or use Velcro pieces that are included.

Oh, and they take 3 AAA's, not 3 AA's.

If I ever build another one I might go this route along with a simple caseydog ac setup. You could easily shave 60lbs of weight off your camper by not using a 12v battery.
